Contains spoilers for “Chicago Med” Season 10, Episode 21 — “Baby Mine…”
It’s been quite some time since they made an appearance, but both of Dr. Daniel Charles’ (Oliver Platt) daughters have made their return to “Chicago Med.” The most exciting comeback for viewers is undoubtedly Robin Charles (Mekia Cox), an epidemiologist who played a significant role in Seasons 2 and 3. During her tenure on the series, she developed a romantic relationship with Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell), but her professional life was interrupted by what seemed to be schizophrenia. It was later discovered that her symptoms were caused by a brain tumor, yet the turmoil led her to break things off with Rhodes and start fresh in Minneapolis under her mother’s careful supervision.
Robin and Daniel reunite with the younger Charles sibling, Anna (Hannah Riley), at the funeral of Daniel’s mother, Margaret (Deanna Dunagan). Notoriously, Margaret had a negative reaction to Robin’s birth and Daniel’s marriage to Caroline (Paula Newsome), and a grown-up Robin took her grandmother to task for her prejudiced behavior. However, in the episode “Baby Mine…,” Robin cheerfully informs Daniel that she and her grandmother had mended fences and maintained contact before Margaret’s death. But that’s not the only update Robin shared with her father about her life.
Robin’s been doing well in Minneapolis
Viewers last saw Robin in Season 5, dealing with her mother’s impending death from lymphoma. Her mother chose not to bond with her children during her illness to preserve their memories of her as she was in better health, leaving a lot for the audience—and Daniel—to catch up on. Besides informing her father of her reconciliation with her grandmother, Robin shares that she’s thriving in Minneapolis, continuing her medical career, although no details surface about her current social or romantic life.
Of course, Daniel has to deal with parental issues of his own during his mom’s funeral. He and Margaret never succeeded in healing the breach between them, and she died estranged from him. But when he eulogizes her, he finds he’s able to let go, realizing that while parenting can be difficult and children and adults grow apart from one another, understanding this crucial fact can help a child forgive and understand who their parents are and why they behave as they do. It’s a lesson Daniel might have to practice next season, as, after the funeral, Anna announces she’s dropped out of college and is moving back home. Hopefully, with Anna in Chicago, fans will get to see more of Robin, too.
