Katy Perry stunned a Maryland musician who dropped out of graduate school by giving him a platinum ticket on Monday’s episode of American Idol on ABC.

‘It’s the 20th year of creating superstars and you’re a superstar,’ said Katy, 37, to Jay Copeland, 23, a musician from Salisbury, Maryland. ‘I think you are worth all the platinum.’

Before his audition, Jay told the judges that after college he entered a graduate program for the arts, but was then told that he needed to choose between acting and music.

‘I was given an ultimatum to choose between the two,’ said Jay. ‘I was told I couldn’t have it all so …I dropped out.’

Jay told them that decided to come on American Idol after giving up his fellowship because he didn’t know ‘if I made the right decision or the wrong decision, but I do know that I made the best decision for myself.’

For his audition, he performed Signed, Sealed & Delivered by Stevie Wonder and when he finished all the judges gave him a standing ovation.

‘Let me tell you, I have been alive a very long time and you just don’t jump on a Stevie Wonder song,’ said judge Lionel Richie, 72. ‘You owned it and on top of that you were having so much fun.’

‘I am telling you, your talent is off the chain,’ said Lionel. ‘We’ve been waiting for you to walk in the door. Hallelujah.’

Country singer Luke Bryan, 45, also was full of praise.

‘Lionel said it. We have been waiting on a kid like you. Because you are going to be able to electrify a crowd. You’re perfect in my opinion,’ Luke said.

‘You have done a lot of studying. You could probably skip a day of school. American Idol has been on the air for 20 years, and we think you’re the perfect candidate for something,’ Katy said.

When Katy told Jay that he would be getting the platinum ticket and would get to skip a round at  Hollywood Week, he was stunned.

‘Oh my God,’ said Jay as he walked out the door with the ticket.

Jay via remote video showed his family that he had won the platinum ticket and Katy spoke to his family about his impressive performance..

‘I don’t know where he was getting his master’s and why that person gave him an ultimatum, but that was God’s way of protecting him and getting him to us,’ said Katy. ‘So we got him now.’

Jay said to the camera, ‘I sacrificed a lot to be here.’

The two-hour show opened with Tobias Hill, 26, from Como, North Carolina, a music teacher who said he wanted to chase his dream of being an entertainer.

‘This is what I want to do,’ said Tobias before his audition.

Tobias performed Knocks Me Off My Feet by Stevie Wonder’ and played the piano while he sang. When he finished, Katy asked him to do some dance moves and he danced to a Bruno Mars song.

‘I’m kind of wondering why he isn’t already a star,’ said Luke. ‘You are put together amazingly. You got it all going on. I mean, vocally, it’s not 100 percent there but you are definitely worthy of getting thrown in the mix of this competition.’

Lionel said, ‘I really do like the enthusiasm of your showmanship. So I like where you’re going.’

All the judges voted him through.

Morgan Gruber, 17, from Fombell, Pennsylvania, went next. She told the judges that she lived on 12 acres and hunted and fished. She performed Can’t be Loved by Elle King. When she was done all the judges got up and clapped for her.

‘That was amazing,’ said Katy when she was done. ‘This is why we do American Idol because we find diamonds in the rough just like you.’

Morgan told the judges that it was her grandmother who encouraged her to sing and she was the reason she came on the show.

‘My sheet said ‘Top 20′ and your grandmother as so many grandmothers are, she was right on the money,’ said Luke.

All the judges voted her on.

Kimmie Caraffa, 25, a server from Cleveland, Ohio, came in and called Luke ‘Lukey-Pookie.’ She said she just loved his smile and dimples.

‘I didn’t even know I had dimples,’ said Luke.

‘Those are fat rolls,’ said Katy pointing at Luke’s face. Katy and Lionel then started calling him ‘Lukey-Pookie.’ Kimmie then sang for the judges ‘How Do I Live’ by Trisha Yearwood.

At the end of her song, she started crying and said ‘I don’t want to make excuses but my voice is going out.’

Lionel told her ‘we’ve been there. Trust me, we know…it’s very simple. It just needs time but you don’t give up just because you cracked.’

Luke said ‘you have a nice voice, but is it completely ready to go tackle the gantlet in the challenge of American Idol? I wouldn’t say that it is currently right now.’

Katy told her ‘I think it is going to be hard for you to compete at the level that we are looking for, but we really appreciate your spirit.’

The judges didn’t vote her on. Luke got up and gave her a hug as she cried. He told her ‘you keep your chin up.’

Kaylin Robertson, 23, from Raleigh, North Carolina, and her boyfriend Matt Gorman, from Philadelphia, auditioned together. Matt said that they both just loved to perform.

‘We write all our songs together and the dream for both of us is to take on this music career,’ said Matt.

They both walked into the audition carrying guitars. Luke told them he was excited to hear their original song which was titled ‘Fast Forever.’

Luke told Kaylin that she had ‘a big voice that’s authentically yours and it has all the right country things going on.’

Luke then said to Matt that he had a ‘laid-back kind of California feeling’ voice.

‘Kaylin you really stand out,’ said Katy. ‘Matt you didn’t shine as much in the duet but you definitely have a grit to your voice.’

Lionel and voted for Matt to move on but Katy and Luke said no. All the judges voted for Kaylin to move on and she started crying.

Lionel said ‘you are going to need Matt as a rock. I’m just going to tell you that because it is not going to be a cakewalk through here. I’m just glad you have a Matt.

‘Me, too,’ said Kaylin. ‘Me, too, trust me.’

Matt told her he was going to be at her side the whole time and that he loved her.

Saylor Woodmansee, 18, a babysitter from Newalla, Oklahoma, said her father video taped her when she was 10 singing an Ariana Grande song that went viral. She said her father was her everything but that ‘three years ago, my dad left me mom and me to move to Kentucky and. Marry the woman that he was cheating on my mom with.’

‘I haven’t seen him in a year,’ Taylor told the judges. ‘Life has just been really hard.’

She said she felt guilty that it was her fault because her father found the woman on her fan page. For her audition, Taylor performed ‘All I Want’ by Kodaline.

Her voice cracked during her emotional performance.

‘I really love your voice,’ said Luke. ‘It was very powerful.’

Katy said ‘you do have a voice on you.’

Luke said, ‘I’m ready to see you spread your wings.’

Taylor said, ‘I’m honestly ready to just live my life and take chances that I never took before.’

All the judges voted her on. Luke came out and gave her a hug. Saylor ran out, jumped into her mother’s arms and told her mom that she was going to Hollywood.  

The next contestant was Cameron Whitcomb, 18, from Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. He performed the song ‘Rock Salt & Nails’ by Waylon Jennings.

Katy said ‘I think there is something there.’

He then told the judges that he has never performed in front of people.

‘That explains a lot,’ said Lionel. ‘You’re not organized, you need time to put it together.’

Lionel gave him a no, but Katy and Luke gave him a yes and voted him on. Cameron did a backflip when they told him he was going on to Hollywood.

Emyrson Flora, 16, a high school student from Cleveland, Ohio, played the piano while she sang ‘The Joke’ by Brandi Carlile for the audition.

Katy told her she had a lot of raw talent. Lionel said ‘the person who was at the end is the person I love.’ Luke said she was very raw and ‘It’s just whether we want to roll dice on the raw.’

All the judges voted her on to go to Hollywood.

Sir Blayke, 28, from Chicago, told the judges that he knew that he wanted to do music at a very young age. He said he left Chicago and moved to pursue his dream but then became homeless in Atlanta. He said he moved to Los Angeles to further his career.

‘Out here in LA, I’m a songwriter now,’ said Sir. ‘I’m still struggling but I’m happy with what I have so far because it shows that I’m doing the right thing.’

Sir performed ‘Dive’ by Ed Sheeran for his audition.

When he finished, Katy asked him if he had anything original that he could share with them.

‘Definitely,’ said Sir who then performed his original song for them.

Luke said, ‘Man, I Love your voice at certain moments. I think you are doing a little bit of trying too hard on some things on your original.’

‘Hopefully you are a quick study,’ said Lionel. ‘We’ve got some folks, they’re not practicing. I loved the texture of your voice.’

Katy said she preferred his original song and that ‘I think that you sound good but I really want to connect with you emotionally.’

Luke gave him a no and Lionel gave him a yes. Katy then decided to give him a yes, too, and Sir screamed.

‘Thank you so much, I promise you won’t regret it,’ said Sir. 

One contestant was a dog groomer who said she even sang to her dogs when she was cutting them. Her name was Carly Mickeal, 23, from Simi Valley, California, and she brought her father Dave to accompany her on the piano for her audition.

‘Lucky dogs!’ screamed Katy when she was done.

‘I really feel like you are a star,’ said Luke.

Lionel said ‘I watched your father and I could tell right away that every little nuance was a part of his expression and teaching you…you were honed in on every phrase, perfectly.’

Katy asked her what dog each of the judges looked like.

Carly said Luke looked like a Labrador, Katy looked like ‘cute little fluffy Pomeranian,’ and that Lionel looked like a Rottweiler or Doberman.

All the judges then voted her on.

‘This ticket means my dreams are one step closer to reality,’ said Carly.

The last contestant of the night was Skyler Maxey-Wert, 25, from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a ballet dancer who currently danced for the Dresden Semperoper Ballett in Germany.

He said that growing up his parents were artistic people and that his father was mime.

‘Growing up we didn’t have any couches in the living room because it was kind of an open space to dance,’ said Skyler. ‘At 18, I moved straight to Germany and started my dance career.’

Skyler said he already had a successful ballet career but that he also always loved to sing. He told the judges that he started posting some of his singing videos on his Instagram and that Brandon Boyd from Incubus reached out to him.

‘And he said, ‘I think you are talented, if you want to, I think you should audition for American Idol,’ said Skyler.

For his audition, Skyler performed ‘For All We Know’ by Donny Hathaway. The judges gave him a standing ovation when he was done.

Katy asked ‘where was this voice when you’re were dancing’

‘I guess in my body,’ said Skyler.

‘You have brought us an element we have never experienced,’ said Lionel.

‘You are holding these notes and making them tangible moments,’ said Luke. ‘And then there’s this professional dancer in there, too.’

Katy asked him if he would ever do both and he said that was the goal. Katy begged him to show them some of his ballet dancing and he agreed to do a simple pirouette. Katy and Luke got up and attempted the pirouette themselves, but then Luke ended up falling off a small platform.

‘I pulled a kidney,’ Luke joked.

Katy danced around the room and then jumped into Skyler’s arms. Katy then took off her jacket and shoes and jumped into Luke’s arms as the theme song from the movie Dirty Dancing ‘I’ve Had The Time of My Life’ played. Luke told Lionel he was next and he jumped into Luke’s arms.

‘Wait, wait,’ said Lionel. .’We are so happy that we have found you that we have gone completely crazy. We forgot to give him the big anointing. It’s a yes for me.’

Katy and Luke also gave him a yes and Skyler threw his arms up and screamed when he realized he was getting the last golden ticket of the night.

When he walked out of the room, Lionel hugged Blake and said ‘the auditions are now a wrap.’ Katie put her jacket and shoes back on.

American Idol will return next week on ABC.
