Is there such a thing as too much excitement for fans of superhero films? Marvel enthusiasts might find themselves pondering this as speculation grows about the number of villains in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Curious about the potential lineup awaiting viewers? Watch our video above for an in-depth look at the rumored cast of characters.

We’ve pieced together some clues about the movie’s primary antagonists. Official behind-the-scenes footage from Sony reveals logos linked to the Inner Demons, a gang associated with the villain Mr. Negative. Marvin Jones III will take on the role of mob boss Tombstone, a character he previously voiced in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” joining a group of actors who have crossed over into the MCU. With the film apparently featuring two rival groups, Peter Parker, played by Tom Holland, may find himself caught in a street war. Additionally, fans can anticipate the return of Michael Mando as Scorpion.

This villainous ensemble is substantial, and there are even more rumored antagonists whose appearances have yet to be confirmed. These characters might only feature in a montage explaining what Spidey has been up to since his last adventure, but regardless, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” appears to be gearing up for a villain-packed spectacle.

Cramming numerous antagonists into a single film is not a novel concept for Spider-Man movies. Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 3” famously included Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Venom (Topher Grace), and the Green Goblin (James Franco) all vying for screen time. Similarly, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” starring Andrew Garfield, featured Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan), and Rhino (Paul Giamatti).

The record for villain-packed Spider-Man films was set by “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which showcased a plethora of foes from across the Spider-Man cinematic universes, including Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, among others. It seems “Brand New Day” aims to surpass these films, but this ambition could be a double-edged sword. Overloading the film with villains might dilute its impact. Is Brand New Day trying to top No Way Home by including even more villains?

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” wouldn’t be breaking any new ground if it included a whole lot of antagonists. Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 3” infamously started this trend, with Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), Venom (Topher Grace), and the Green Goblin (James Franco) sharing the screen. Over in the Andrew Garfield continuity, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” had Electro (Jamie Foxx), the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan), and Rhino (Paul Giamatti) all in one film.

The king of these jam-packed Spidey movies is “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which teems with evil. Villains from every “Spider-Man” movie universe show up, including Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), and Willem Dafoe’s version of the Green Goblin, to name but a few. It seems like “Brand New Day” is going to try and top all of those, and that has us worried — if the film tries to squeeze in too many bad guys it might end up falling flat.
