Warning: Spoilers Ahead for “Boston Blue” Season 1, Episode 1 — “Faith and Family”
Fans of “Blue Bloods” have long speculated about the simmering chemistry between Maria Baez and Danny Reagan. Their patience was finally rewarded in the premiere episode of the “Blue Bloods” spin-off, “Boston Blue.” The much-anticipated romance has taken a significant step forward, as viewers got a glimpse of Maria (played by Marisa Ramirez) and Danny (portrayed by Donnie Wahlberg) enjoying a romantic moment, marking a year since they first became a couple. Throughout the episode, Danny openly refers to Maria as his girlfriend.
However, their newfound happiness is abruptly interrupted when tragedy strikes. Danny’s son, Sean (Mika Amonsen), is severely injured in an explosion, leaving him on life support. This dire situation forces Danny to leave Maria behind in New York as he rushes to be by his son’s side, casting a shadow over their budding relationship.
This development was a deliberate choice by the creative team behind “Boston Blue.” As co-showrunner Brandon Margolis explained to Variety, the team was keen to resolve the lingering question from “Blue Bloods” about what transpired during Danny and Maria’s long-awaited pizza outing. Margolis emphasized the need to continue the story from “Blue Bloods” in a way that feels authentic and timely, acknowledging the fans who have eagerly anticipated Danny and Maria’s romantic progression.
Marisa Ramirez, who will appear in at least one more episode of “Boston Blue’s” first season, was excited to reprise her role. She believes that after over a decade of friendship, Danny and Maria are well-equipped to navigate their relationship’s new dynamics. In a conversation with TV Insider, she expressed optimism about their future, stating, “They can adjust and shift and see what happens. I think they’re both mature enough to handle it.”
However, in a separate interview with Us magazine, Ramirez offered a more cautious perspective, warning about the challenges of a long-distance relationship. “You should always worry about long distance,” she remarked, adding, “You never know what’s gonna happen. Always worry.” Despite the uncertainty regarding her future on “Boston Blue,” Ramirez is open to the idea of her character relocating to Boston, potentially bringing her adopted daughter Elena along. She hinted at a storyline filled with “push and pull” until a resolution is reached in their relationship.
Danny and Maria’s romance is hopefully going to last
Marisa Ramirez will appear in at least one more episode during Season 1 of “Boston Blue.” The actress admits that she jumped at the chance to reprise her role and thinks Danny and Maria have a fair shot at a long-lasting romance. “After over more than a 10-year-long friendship, they can adjust and shift and see what happens,” she told TV Insider. “I think they’re both mature enough to handle it.”
She sang a different tune while speaking to Us magazine, however. “You should always worry about long distance,” she said, adding, “You never know what’s gonna happen. Always worry.” Ramirez also said that she has no idea what her future on “Boston Blue,” might be, but can easily imagine her character moving to Boston to live with Danny, her adopted daughter Elena in tow. She told fans to expect “a little bit of push and pull and back and forth until something does happen” regarding the couple’s relationship.
Ramirez added that she enjoys it when there’s a lot of conflict between a couple, which means that fans might have to brace themselves for a bit of a fight until things shake out either way. “Boston Blue” airs on Friday nights at 10:00 p.m. ET on CBS-TV.
