This expansion has brought beloved characters from animated series like “Star Wars Rebels” and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” into the live-action realm. While fans are thrilled to see these characters come to life in a new format, the transition hasn’t been without its controversies, particularly regarding the character Sabine Wren, originally voiced by Tiya Sircar.
In the animated series “Rebels,” Sabine is not portrayed as Force-sensitive. However, her live-action debut in the series “Ahsoka” presents a different narrative, suggesting that Sabine, now played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo, has been training as a Jedi. This implies she may possess some level of Force sensitivity, a significant shift that has sparked debate among fans.
When audiences meet Sabine in “Rebels,” she’s well on her way to becoming a Mandalorian warrior. Unlike other Mandalorians, who are still familiar with the Jedi and their ways, she is purposefully not given a storyline related to Force-sensitivity. “We really felt not only did it step on Ezra’s story, but it was like a retread of… okay, we already did this,” “Rebels” writer Henry Gilroy said to Pod of Rebellion. “So yeah, the idea of Sabine training as a Jedi when she is already this fantastic warrior of her own type, we felt like ‘this is overkill.’”
The main point of contention revolves around whether Force sensitivity is an inherent trait or a skill that can be developed by anyone, given that the Force is a ubiquitous presence. The introduction of midi-chlorians in the prequel trilogy implied that being a Jedi was a genetic trait. However, recent interpretations suggest that everyone may have some Force sensitivity, although to varying degrees.
Fans have theories as to how Sabine’s Force-sensitivity works in canon

Some argue that Sabine did not exhibit Force sensitivity in “Star Wars Rebels” because Kanan Jarrus, played by Freddie Prinze Jr., would have recognized it during her training. Others propose that her lack of connection to the Force was due to emotional barriers, which she might have overcome between the events of “Rebels” and “Ahsoka.” This theory suggests that Sabine has since opened herself to the Force, allowing her to train under Ahsoka Tano, played by Rosario Dawson, as a Padawan.
While some see this development as a retcon, others believe it fits within the “Star Wars” canon, especially considering writer Henry Gilroy’s insights. The ongoing debate includes the role of midi-chlorians, which some argue are necessary only for becoming a Jedi, not for wielding the Force.
