Fans of the wizarding world were treated to an exciting glimpse today with the release of the first trailer for HBO’s highly anticipated “Harry Potter” TV series reboot. Alongside the trailer, HBO has unveiled initial images of three pivotal Hogwarts characters, giving audiences a fresh look at Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, and Severus Snape.
In the newly released images, John Lithgow embodies the wise Albus Dumbledore, standing in a Hogwarts hallway, reminiscent of the portrayals by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the films. Janet McTeer offers a fresh take on Minerva McGonagall, steering towards a more classic “stern professor” appearance, distinct from the witchy persona made famous by Maggie Smith.
Paapa Essiedu’s portrayal of Severus Snape presents a notably younger version than the well-known depiction by Alan Rickman. This choice aligns with the book series, as Snape is indeed in his thirties during the timeline of the events, being contemporaneous with Harry Potter’s parents, James and Lily.
These character reveals add to the growing list of familiar faces slowly introduced by HBO for the series. The trailer also reintroduces iconic characters such as Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
Intrigue and speculation abound as the trailer teases numerous details, notably that the first season is titled “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” While the trailer evokes a sense of nostalgia with its close resemblance to the beloved films, it promises new elements that were absent from the cinematic adaptations. Whether this series will carve out its own identity apart from the films remains a topic of eager anticipation.
HBO’s Harry Potter is shaping up
Mark your calendars, as “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” is set to debut on HBO on Christmas Day, 2026.
The many small details in the HBO “Harry Potter” series’ trailer also reveal a number of things to come, including the fact that the first season’s title will, perhaps unsurprisingly, be “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” On the whole, however, the “Harry Potter” trailer has everyone saying that the show looks a bit too close to the movies for comfort, despite some added details that the big screen adaptations never featured. It remains to be seen whether the series can differentiate itself from the well-liked films and stand on its own two legs.
“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” will premiere on HBO on Christmas Day, 2026.
