Although it was well-received by critics, earning an 87% “fresh” approval score on Rotten Tomatoes, “The Toxic Avenger” had a brief and quiet presence at the box office. The film quickly moved in and out of theaters in just a few weeks, but those who missed it on the big screen can catch it on demand and through other digital platforms starting September 30, 2025. There is currently no information regarding a physical home video release for the movie.
This low-budget remake features Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a janitor transformed into the titular superhero after exposure to toxic waste. His goal? To save his son, exact revenge on the Garbanger family (portrayed by Kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood) for their nefarious, environment-damaging actions, and possibly reunite his family. Despite efforts to generate grassroots interest in the film, Toxie struggled at the box office. However, the original film also wasn’t a major box office success.
This take on Toxie didn’t quite make it into the top
The new rendition of “The Toxic Avenger” didn’t fare well commercially, earning just $3.2 million globally. Nonetheless, none of the original Toxie films were box office successes either. The original “Toxic Avenger” gained popularity through video releases despite limited theatrical exposure, opening on only 45 screens. The sequels — “The Toxic Avenger Part II” and “The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie” — both debuted in 1989, generating $792,966 and $363,561 respectively.
Despite their initial box office performance, the trilogy garnered enough attention through cable TV and video rentals to lead to a kid-friendly animated series on Fox called “The Toxic Crusaders,” a direct-to-video sequel “Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger Part IV,” an off-Broadway musical, and an animated film titled “Mr. Melvin.” It seems Toxie’s future is bright despite his challenges at the box office.
