Warning: This article contains spoilers for upcoming episodes of “NCIS” and “NCIS: Origins.”

Mark Harmon is set to make a much-anticipated return to his iconic role on “NCIS,” as part of an exciting crossover event with “NCIS: Origins,” scheduled to air on November 11. This special episode will revolve around a case that dates back to the 1990s during Gibbs’ tenure at Camp Pendleton and will see its resolution in the present day, thanks to the efforts of the current “NCIS” team. It’s important to note that Harmon will only feature in the “Origins” segment of the crossover, so fans shouldn’t expect him to interact with characters from the “NCIS” series. Additionally, for this crossover, the shows will swap their usual time slots, with “Origins” leading the way, followed by “NCIS.”

Intriguingly, the “Origins” co-showrunners, David J. North and Gina Lucita Monreal, have teased a glimpse into Gibbs’ life in Alaska, hinting that he may not be living alone. “We don’t want to give too much away, but let’s just say Gibbs is no longer alone,” they revealed in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. Whether this implies the presence of a new romantic interest or perhaps a pet remains a mystery.

Since stepping down as a regular on “NCIS” in 2021, Mark Harmon has maintained a relatively low profile, though he continues to accept select roles in Hollywood. Most recently, he returned as Ryan, the husband of Jamie Lee Curtis’ character Tess Coleman, in the sequel “Freakier Friday.”

Although he has largely retired from portraying Gibbs on-screen, Harmon remains closely connected to the “NCIS” universe. He makes occasional appearances on “NCIS: Origins,” often providing narration and offering Gibbs’ modern-day reflections on past cases. Furthermore, Harmon serves as an executive producer for both “NCIS” and “Origins,” taking an active role behind the scenes. He notably played a significant part in casting Austin Stowell as the younger Gibbs.

Mark Harmon has remained close to NCIS

On the personal front, Harmon has been enjoying family life. His son, Sean, and daughter-in-law, Courtney Prather, welcomed a son, Cooper Knox Harmon, in May, making Harmon a proud grandfather. It’s easy to imagine that Gibbs would approve of such family-oriented values.

But even if he’s largely retired playing Gibbs on-screen, it doesn’t mean Harmon has been far from the “NCIS” world as a whole. His character makes occasional appearances on “NCIS: Origins,” typically narrating and giving Gibbs’ current perspective on a past case. Harmon also works as an executive producer on “NCIS” and “Origins.” He appears to be hands-on behind the scenes, and was heavily involved in the casting of Austin Stowell as Gibbs.

Harmon’s been just as busy on the personal front — his son, Sean and his wife Courtney Prather, recently made him a grandfather with the birth of their son, Cooper Knox Harmon in May. It’s easy to imagine Gibbs approving these kinds of family values.
