Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2, Episode 2 — “Shoot the Moon”
The White Tiger storyline in “Daredevil: Born Again” seemed to have reached its conclusion. Hector Ayala, portrayed by the late Kamar de los Reyes, was revealed to be the masked vigilante White Tiger after a tragic incident in Season 1 where he inadvertently caused the death of a corrupt police officer. The subsequent legal battle and Hector’s assassination appeared to fulfill multiple narrative purposes.
Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) had defended Hector, which resulted in the police developing a deep dislike for the blind attorney. This tension led to the formation of the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. Hector’s demise underscored the harsh reality faced by masked vigilantes in New York City, while the murderer imitating Punisher brought Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) into the fray. Mission accomplished, or so it seemed.
However, the White Tiger story continues to evolve in the polished and confident second season of “Daredevil: Born Again.” Comic book enthusiasts might have noticed the significant presence of Hector’s niece, Angela del Toro (played by Camila Rodriguez), in Season 1. In the episode “Shoot the Moon,” Hector’s widow, Soledad (Ashley Marie Ortiz), is unjustly detained by the AVTF, leaving Angela in distress. Seeking solace, Angela turns to Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James) and requests access to Hector’s suit and the White Tiger amulet. Though she doesn’t take any action yet, her intentions are clear — Angela is poised to take up the mantle of White Tiger, mirroring her comic book path.
In the comics, Angela del Toro is already a seasoned FBI agent when her uncle passes away. Her childhood connections with heroes like Danny “Iron Fist” Rand set the stage for her to inherit the White Tiger amulet and seek mentorship from Daredevil. Her journey includes bizarre adventures, alliances with Black Widow, a comic book death and subsequent resurrection, a tenure as a servant of the Hand, and a fierce rivalry with her aunt, fellow White Tiger Ava Ayala.
The “Daredevil: Born Again” adaptation presents a younger, less experienced Angela, diverging significantly from her comic book origins. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is taking creative liberties with her character, likely due to the complexity and scope of certain storylines, like Daredevil’s leadership of the Hand, which the MCU may not tackle any time soon.
In the comics, Angela del Toro is a hero with connections to multiple vigilantes
The comic book version of Angela del Toro is already a grown woman and a trained FBI investigator when her uncle dies. When she was young, she already knew heroes like Danny “Iron Fist” Rand, and when she ends up in possession of the White Tiger amulet, she immediately starts seeking superhero mentoring from Daredevil. She would go on to have several interestingly strange adventures, including team-ups with Black Widow, a comic book death and resurrection, a stint as the Hand’s loyal servant, and a bitter feud with her aunt and fellow White Tiger, Ava Ayala.
Since the “Daredevil: Born Again” version of Angela is considerably younger and decidedly unaffiliated with federal authorities, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is already playing fast and loose with the character’s comic origins. This is understandable, considering her ties to certain storylines that the MCU is unlikely to adapt in a hurry, such as Daredevil taking control of the Hand.
Still, Angela was already very investigation-minded in “Born Again” Season 1, which definitely seems to suggest that the show is paying attention to the source material. The fact that she now seems to have her eye on the physical attribute-enhancing White Tiger amulet seems to indicate that “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2 may be introducing a brand new vigilante sooner rather than later.
