The crime drama “Dexter” was a standout series during its initial seasons, though its latter episodes dwindled in quality, ending with a notorious finale. Despite its decline, the show inspired multiple spinoffs, possibly aiming to rewrite the memory of its original conclusion. Among these was “Dexter: Original Sin,” a prequel featuring a young Dexter Morgan portrayed by Patrick Gibson, who replaces Michael C. Hall. In this series, Dexter begins to explore his dark impulses.

Fans faced disappointment as “Dexter: Original Sin” was canceled after just one season, despite early plans for a second. It aired on Paramount+ with Showtime from December 2024 to February 2025. Although a follow-up season was promised, an official statement on August 22 declared that Paramount would not proceed with the series. No definitive explanation for the cancellation was provided, but it coincided with Paramount merging with Skydance, triggering numerous changes within the company, including the cancellation of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

Insiders at Paramount revealed a strategic focus on “Dexter: Resurrection,” another spinoff where Michael C. Hall once more takes on the titular role. Despite the end of “Original Sin,” there’s potential for future expansions of the “Dexter” universe by Paramount and Skydance.

Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 will probably happen

“Dexter: Original Sin” followed the trend of prequels based on original series characters, similar to shows like “Young Sheldon” and “NCIS: Origins.” Even though “Original Sin” has ended, hope remains for fans: While “Dexter: Resurrection” hasn’t been confirmed for another season, the creation of a writers’ room suggests further developments in Dexter’s tale are on the horizon.

“Dexter: Resurrection” continues after the storyline of “Dexter: New Blood,” featuring Michael C. Hall reprising his iconic role as a serial killer targeting only wrongdoers. Its announcement was unexpected due to Dexter’s apparent death in “New Blood.” Nonetheless, if Paramount opts to pursue a singular “Dexter” series, “Resurrection” appears the logical choice, given Hall’s legacy, unlike “Original Sin,” which aimed to introduce fresh faces.

Critically acclaimed, “Dexter: Resurrection” boasts a 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating and premiered in July to an audience 46% larger than that of “Original Sin.” Fans likely appreciated Hall’s return more than a new actor. If you haven’t watched it yet, now could be a great opportunity to catch up on “Dexter: Resurrection” in anticipation of a hopeful Season 2.
