The “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” movie franchise has long faced an uphill battle with critics. Out of the seven films released to date, only “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” have managed to escape the dreaded “rotten” label on Rotten Tomatoes. The latest installment, “Jurassic World Rebirth,” which premiered in 2025 with Scarlett Johansson in the lead, was dismissed by Looper as “a disappointment 65 million years in the making.” Yet, as is often the case with colossal blockbuster series, audiences seem unfazed by critics’ opinions, flocking to theaters to catch the latest “Jurassic World” film.

Take “Rebirth,” for instance, which raked in just under $900 million at the worldwide box office. While it may have fallen short compared to other “Jurassic World” entries, the figure still marks it as a significant hit. The film is now available for streaming, debuting on Peacock today, October 30. This addition completes the “Jurassic World” lineup on the platform, although the original “Jurassic Park” trilogy remains unavailable on any streaming service at the moment.

Scarlett Johansson, in a February interview with Vanity Fair, shared her longstanding admiration for the “Jurassic” films. Her fascination dates back to childhood when she was so enamored with the original “Jurassic Park” that she spent a year sleeping in a themed pup tent she set up in her shared bedroom. As she grew older, Johansson’s enthusiasm translated into a career aspiration to be part of the franchise.

Johansson admitted to frequently nudging her agents about her availability for any new “Jurassic” projects. During the reshoots for “Black Widow” in 2020, she discovered that she was filming near the set of “Jurassic World Dominion” and eagerly sought an opportunity to visit. However, it was a fortuitous conversation with Steven Spielberg—director of the first two “Jurassic Park” films and a continued executive producer on the series—that truly set the wheels in motion. Spielberg, having heard whispers about Johansson’s passion for the franchise, asked if they were true. Upon her confirmation, she found herself reviewing the script for “Rebirth” just a month later.

Scarlett Johansson is a lifelong fan of the Jurassic franchise

As Scarlett Johansson revealed to Vanity Fair in February when discussing her role in “Jurassic World Rebirth,” she has been a fan of the “Jurassic” movies since she was a child. “I was really crazy about the [original] film, and I slept in a ‘Jurassic Park’ pup tent in my bedroom I shared with my sister for a year,” she recalled. That fandom carried over into adulthood, when Johansson was in a position to actually star in a “Jurassic” movie herself.

“Anytime the trades would report a new ‘Jurassic’ movie, I would forward to my agents like, ‘Hey, I’m available,’” the actor explained. While doing reshoots for the Marvel movie “Black Widow” in 2020, Johansson found out that she was working right near the soundstage where production on “Jurassic World Dominion” was taking place and even asked to visit the set.

But it wasn’t until she was casually chatting with Steven Spielberg one day — director of the first two “Jurassic Park” movies and an executive producer on the franchise ever since — that he happened to inquire whether the rumors of her “Jurassic” fandom were true. She confirmed it — and was looking at the script for “Rebirth” a month later.
