Dwayne Johnson is famously associated with major action films such as “Fast Five,” “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” and “San Andreas.” While his career includes some lesser-known flops, his 2014 film “Hercules” stands out as an intriguing success. Despite its initial popularity, “Hercules” seems to have faded from memory on Johnson’s extensive film list. Recently, however, the movie has experienced a resurgence on the streaming service Tubi, where it has become a significant hit, ranking fourth in the platform’s most-watched titles.

“Hercules,” a lavish adaptation focused on the legendary Roman hero, features Johnson in a role previously held by famous strongmen like Mickey Hargitay, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Lou Ferrigno. Many would argue that Johnson excels in this role, starring in a movie inspired by the graphic novel “Hercules: The Thracian Wars.” Directed by Brett Ratner, the film delivers a polished, intense, and expansive adventure with grand action sequences and massive battles, immersing its audience in the epic struggle Hercules faces against a ruthless warlord.

Though reviews ranged from positive to mixed, both critics and viewers tended to agree that the film’s action sequences were worth the ticket price. In essence, if you’re in search of a stunning action flick featuring a heroic figure in an ancient war, “Hercules” fits the bill—and it’s now accessible for free.

Johnson easily outshined a rival Hercules movie

The tale of the Roman god Hercules has been a staple in Hollywood for many years, yet 2014 was notable for the release of two Hercules films. Apart from Johnson’s action-packed “Hercules,” another film, “The Legend of Hercules,” debuted earlier the same year, showcasing a young Hercules as Zeus’s son in a polished origin story.

Kellan Lutz starred in “The Legend of Hercules,” aiming to establish himself as a prominent action hero in the early 2010s. Unfortunately, the film fell short of expectations and failed to convince audiences of Lutz’s star potential, partly because Johnson’s “Hercules” came out soon after and outshone it significantly.

In the end, “The Legend of Hercules” received dreadful reviews and performed poorly at the box office, struggling to recover its modest production costs. Despite this setback, it might not even be Lutz’s most regretted project. In contrast, Johnson’s “Hercules” was a commercial success, more than doubling its $100 million budget. Surprisingly, despite its success, the film did not lead to a sequel.
