Spike Lee has delivered some of Denzel Washington’s finest films, and their newest collaboration, the New York-set crime thriller “Highest 2 Lowest,” does not disappoint. In this film, Washington portrays a music mogul whose son becomes the target of a kidnapper, only to discover that the criminal mistakenly took his driver’s son instead. Faced with a dilemma, he has to choose between keeping his fortune or securing his driver’s son’s release. The movie features appearances from stars like A$AP Rocky and Ice Spice, with Dean Winters, known as the Allstate Mayhem commercial guy, being a standout surprise.

Dean Winters is famous for his chaotic Allstate Mayhem commercials, where he causes humorous havoc, whether as a distracted driver or a lazy guard dog. These commercials highlight the unexpected mayhem that can disrupt your life without proper insurance. Beyond commercials, Winters has also showcased his talent in numerous films and TV shows. In “Highest 2 Lowest,” he takes on the role of Detective Higgins, a more abrasive cop involved in the kidnapping case. His blunt demeanor creates memorable and uncouth moments during serious situations in the film.

Highest 2 Lowest contains a cheeky reference to Dean Winters’ Allstate role

Originally hesitant about becoming the Allstate Mayhem character, Dean Winters has now fully embraced the role. During an interview with “CBS Sunday Morning”, he expressed appreciation for fan recognition, stating, “I wouldn’t have the lifestyle I live if it wasn’t for people watching the commercials, watching the TV shows and movies, paying for their insurance. So, every time someone stops me, my first thought is, ‘Oh, this person is helping me pay my mortgage.'” Given his positive outlook on his commercial success, it’s no wonder “Highest 2 Lowest” includes a subtle nod to the Allstate Mayhem campaign.

As David King (Denzel Washington) and Paul Christopher (Jeffrey Wright) decide to reclaim David’s money from the kidnapper, Paul arms himself for “insurance,” referring to his gun as “Jake from State Farm” for comedic effect. The joke extends when Paul reveals a second gun named “Mayhem,” playing into the insurance theme while acknowledging Winters’ famed role. This homage to Winters’ character adds a layer of humor, as he has described the role of Mayhem as “the greatest thing that ever happened to me.”
