Though Sabrina Carpenter is widely recognized as a pop sensation, thanks to hits like “Please Please Please,” “Espresso,” and “Busy Woman,” her initial foray was into acting. There are two film categories she hopes to explore further: action movies and period dramas, which she hasn’t yet had the chance to delve into.
Carpenter began her acting journey with guest roles on intense dramas such as “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” in 2011 and “Orange Is the New Black” in 2013. She also provided a recurring voice in the animated series “Sofia the First” in 2013, eventually landing a lead role in the Disney Channel series “Girl Meets World” as Maya.
This was her breakout role, cementing her association with Disney through projects like the 2016 Disney Channel Original Movie “Adventures in Babysitting,” voicing a prominent character in “Milo Murphy’s Law,” and appearing as herself in two episodes of “Soy Luna.” Her filmography extends to Netflix films like “Tall Girl” and “Work It,” an adaptation of “The Hate U Give,” as well as the 2022 thriller “Emergency.”
Sabrina Carpenter wants to do an action movie
“I’ve always wanted to do an action film,” Carpenter mentioned to Cosmopolitan UK in 2022. She cited “Kick-Ass” as an early influence, noting how exciting it appeared. Although she’s showcased her talents in singing, dancing, and basketball for previous roles, taking part in a full-scale action movie and performing extensive stunt work would be a refreshing experience for her.
Although a new “Kick-Ass” installment seems unlikely, numerous action series could potentially welcome her. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DC Universe (DCU) continuously introducing fresh faces, she might take on a superhero character like Dazzler—a role once speculated to be perfect for Taylor Swift. Alternatively, she could star in a reboot of a female-centric action film such as “Charlie’s Angels” or “Kill Bill.” Even though these aren’t currently in development, they would be excellent platforms for Carpenter to showcase her action prowess.
She would love to be in a period piece
Sabrina Carpenter additionally revealed to Cosmopolitan her interest in starring in a period drama, saying she finds the idea “really cool” and has long been captivated by it. Period films often draw from timeless literature, such as “Pride and Prejudice.” While Carpenter has previously been part of an adaptation, it was of a contemporary work, “The Hate U Give.”
Period pieces are all the rage at the moment, with shows like “Bridgerton” and “The Buccaneers” being incredibly popular. Those series could present ample opportunities for Carpenter to join, as they continue to add members to the cast with each new season. There has also been a variety of period movies made in the last few years, from the 2019 adaptation of “Little Women,” directed by Greta Gerwig, to Emerald Fennell’s forthcoming “Wuthering Heights.” As more period adaptations and originals go into production — and with action movies a box office staple — Sabrina Carpenter might find a role for herself in both genres in the not too distant future.
