Renowned filmmaker Spike Lee has collaborated with some of the most outstanding actors in the industry. Therefore, when he praises a particular performer, it is worth paying attention. During the promotion of his latest movie, “Highest 2 Lowest,” Lee did not hesitate to honor the film’s lead actor, Denzel Washington, with high acclaim.
“A key reason Denzel is a genius is that he doesn’t just depend on the script or direction; he infuses his full essence,” Lee expressed to Business Insider. “He brings everything he embodies into every role he tackles. That’s why I consider him the greatest living actor.”
While the praise might seem lofty, it’s justified when considering Washington’s phenomenal achievements, which include two Academy Awards—one for Best Actor and another for Best Supporting Actor. Lee and Washington have a long-standing partnership, crafting a number of unforgettable films that have achieved critical acclaim.
Spike Lee has worked with Denzel Washington numerous times
Washington and Lee have collaborated on five films, each offering a distinct and unique cinematic experience. They first worked together on 1990’s “Mo’ Better Blues,” Lee’s sequel to “Do the Right Thing.” This film revolves around a jazz trumpeter’s life, highlighting themes of love, friendship, and the influence of music.
Following this was the iconic “Malcolm X” in 1992, a biopic portraying the life of the eponymous political and Black liberation leader, widely regarded as one of Washington’s most impressive performances. In 1998, “He Got Game” delved into family dynamics as it told the story of a parolee attempting to persuade his basketball prodigy son to join the college that might give the father his freedom. The 2006 thriller “Inside Man” detailed a complex situation when a bank heist deteriorates. Lastly, “Highest 2 Lowest” draws inspiration from the 1963 Akira Kurosawa work “High and Low,” focusing on a music executive ensnared in a kidnapping conspiracy.
Their extensive collaboration has fostered a natural creative flow between them. “With Denzel on set, it’s like having Michael Jordan. He can do whatever he wants,” Lee commented to Business Insider. “If Denzel chooses to stray from the script, I’m staying quiet.” It seems the duo will continue delivering noteworthy performances together for many years ahead.
