Why The Traitors Is Going In A Bold Direction With No Celebrity Contestants

“The Traitors” is a reality TV show where popular reality stars and public figures compete in a game that combines elements of Mafia and Clue. The challenge for the Faithfuls is to identify and eliminate the Traitors among them while cohabiting in a Scottish castle. Each season sees the Traitors becoming increasingly cunning and ruthless in their strategies.

This Peacock series has featured contestants from “Survivor,” “Big Brother,” and “The Real Housewives,” including notable figures like Cirie Fields and Dylan Efron, brother of a well-known actor. However, in an exciting update shared during a panel at Televerse 2025, host Alan Cumming and several past participants announced plans for a completely civilian season of “The Traitors.” This version, devoid of celebrity competitors, will premiere on NBC instead of Peacock, marking a notable shift for the series.

According to Cumming, the cash prize, potentially reaching up to $250,000 based on the amount accumulated over the season, will have a more significant impact on non-celebrity contestants. “The money will mean more to them,” he remarked at Televerse 2025 (via Yahoo!). He expressed enthusiasm about the changes, adding, “I think it’s going to be a hoot.”

What will a civilian season of The Traitors look like?

Unlike many reality competition shows that occasionally feature celebrities, “The Traitors” primarily consisted of celebrity participants since its beginning. A major appeal for the audience was watching familiar personalities and predicting their actions based on their past TV behavior.

The upcoming civilian season aligns with a more traditional format where audiences get to know contestants through their game decisions. While viewers are used to speculating on which reality star might join next or if notorious personalities would be designated as Traitors, this new direction promises a fresh dynamic.

Although “The Traitors” is mostly linked with celebrity contestants, its debut season did blend notable figures with everyday individuals. Alongside personalities like Cirie Fields, Olympian Ryan Lochte, and Brandi Glanville, there were players like Azra the yoga instructor, Anjelica the hair stylist, and Quentin the political analyst.
