Why The Witcher Season 4 Was A Total Flop

Replacing a beloved actor in a pivotal role is no small feat, as the team behind “The Witcher” discovered when Henry Cavill exited the series to explore different ventures. If you’re curious about why the fourth season of “The Witcher” stumbled, our video delves into all the intricate details.

The most glaring issue with the latest season is the introduction of Liam Hemsworth as the new Witcher with two seasons still ahead. While Hemsworth brings his own charm, having garnered a positive reputation through his role as Gale in “The Hunger Games,” his portrayal lacks the effortless charisma that Cavill naturally exuded. Despite his talent, Hemsworth’s portrayal of Geralt often falls short, and the contrast becomes particularly stark in scenes originally filmed with Cavill. Episode recaps have only highlighted these differences, making the transition more jarring.

This season also grapples with narrative pacing, as key characters Ciri (Freya Allan), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), and Geralt spend excessive time apart, embarking on quests to reunite. Although their eventual reunion offers a satisfying payoff for invested viewers, the lengthy separation tested the patience of some fans and critics.

Reactions from “The Witcher” fanbase have been tepid at best regarding Season 4. One fan, @thisweirdlife, expressed their disappointment, saying, “No hate for Liam Hemsworth, but The Witcher is lifeless without Henry and the way they tried to rewrite the scenes with Liam is cringe enough to not continue.” Others were less forgiving, like @SiSpang12, who labeled Hemsworth as the “actual worst” and criticized his seeming unfamiliarity with the series or its source material.

Critics, too, questioned whether “The Witcher” had overstayed its welcome past Season 3. In a two-star review, Nick Hilton from The Times remarked on Hemsworth’s portrayal, noting, “His Geralt lacks either the physicality or emotional gravitas of Cavill’s, and his thinner voice … accentuates this difference.” Similarly, Sarah Dempster from The Guardian bluntly stated, “Hemsworth, bless his pleather britches, is no Henry Cavill,” critiquing his accent and delivery.

Fans aren’t too keen on this new Geralt, either

But audiences weren’t the only ones left wondering if “The Witcher” should have ended after Season 3. Critics didn’t hold back their thoughts on Hemsworth’s portrayal, with The Times’ Nick Hilton saying of the actor in a two-star review that, “His Geralt lacks either the physicality or emotional gravitas of Cavill’s, and his thinner voice … accentuates this difference.” The Guardian’s Sarah Dempster was of a likewise mindset with the writer simply stating, “Hemsworth, bless his pleather britches, is no Henry Cavill” after insulting Hemsworth’s attempt at replicating Cavill’s distinct accent and mumbling.
