The animated series “Invincible” has consistently attracted top-tier talent to its voice cast, boasting contributions from renowned figures such as Seth Rogen, Walton Goggins, Mark Hamill, and Mahershala Ali. As the show progresses into its fourth season, it continues to expand its impressive roster. If you’ve been keenly tuning in to the recent episodes, you might have noticed some familiar voices from the “Star Trek” universe making their debut.
It’s evident that the creators of “Invincible” hold a deep affection for the iconic sci-fi series, as demonstrated by a full-fledged “Star Trek” parody featured in Season 4, Episode 2. This isn’t the first brush the show has had with “Star Trek” alumni, either.
Previously, Michael Dorn, who famously portrayed Worf in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” lent his deep, commanding voice to the character Battle Beast in earlier seasons. Zachary Quinto, known for his role as Spock in the Kelvin timeline “Star Trek” films, voiced Robot across 17 episodes. However, for Season 4, Ross Marquand has taken over the voice of Robot. Adding to this stellar ensemble are two more celebrated “Trek” actors.
The conclusion of “Invincible” Season 3 hinted at the return of Damien Darkblood, played by Clancy Brown, the demon detective from Season 1 who was on the trail of Nolan, voiced by J.K. Simmons. While Damien’s presence in the comics is limited, the series takes creative liberties, thrusting him into an original storyline where he drags Mark Grayson, played by Steven Yeun, into a hellish realm to confront Volcanikka, portrayed by Indira Varma. Beyond Satan, played by Bruce Campbell, the storyline introduces Domina, voiced by Kate Mulgrew.
Domina, the sister of Damien, enters the fray at the start of Episode 4, only to meet a brutal demise. However, in true demonic fashion, she resurrects by the episode’s conclusion, hinting at her potential return as Damien delves into bizarre happenings on Earth.
Kate Mulgrew is a demon on Invincible Season 4
Kate Mulgrew is widely recognized for her role as Captain Kathryn Janeway on “Star Trek: Voyager,” where her sharp intellect and unwavering resolve made her a beloved leader. Although Janeway and Domina might appear vastly different, both characters share an aggressive tenacity that resonates in their respective domains.
Domina is Damien’s sister, who battles alongside him at the beginning of Episode 4 but meets a gruesome end. Of course, demons are hard to kill permanently, so she’s resurrected by the episode’s end. That means there could be more of her in the future, especially with Damien investigating strange occurrences on the surface world.
Mulgrew is probably best known for playing Captain Kathryn Janeway on “Star Trek: Voyager.” With a great intellect and determined protectiveness, she made for a great leader and popular fan favorite. Captain Janeway has plenty of fierce moments on “Star Trek” to prove that, and even though she may seem like the polar opposite to Domina on the surface, both are aggressive in their own ways.
LeVar Burton is the perfect AI voice in Invincible Season 4
When a horde of Mark Grayson variants wreaked annihilation on the planet in “Invincible” Season 3, one of the only heroes to defeat a variant was Tech Jacket (Zoey Deutch), who acquired alien armor that completely covers her body and provides her with immensely powerful weapons. It also comes with a handy AI system that informs her of when she’s taking too much damage, and while it’s slightly robotic, it’s unmistakably the voice of LeVar Burton.
Many millennials probably remember him as the host of “Reading Rainbow,” but he also starred on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” as chief engineer Geordi La Forge. Born blind, Geordi uses a special visor that allows him to see (he later switches to eye implants). He’s extremely compassionate and skilled in his line of work, even if his social skills could use some improvement.
Given that Geordi is a major character on “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” it’s a shame he wasn’t parodied in “Invincible” Season 4, Episode 2 along with the other “TNG” caricatures. Still, fans should take the continued casting of “Star Trek” actors as a sign that they should always be on the lookout for plenty of other “Star Trek” Easter eggs throughout “Invincible.”
