Contains spoilers for “Night Court” Season 3, Episode 18 — “A Decent Proposal”
Abby Stone (Melissa Rauch) has always been on the hunt for her perfect match, but now she finds herself caught between two possible suitors, much to her surprise. To start, Spencer (Simon Helberg) unexpectedly enters Abby’s office, leaving her shocked and confused. “What the f*** are you doing here?” she exclaims. “Just came by to give you this,” he responds, then proceeds to kiss her.
Just then, Dan Fielding (John Larroquette) and Abby’s current partner, Jake (Ryan Hansen), burst in. When Jake demands to know who Spencer is, Spencer boldly declares that he and Abby are married. This revelation is stunning, especially as Abby nearly tied the knot with another man, Rand (Pete Holmes), in Season 1—an often overlooked fact—and has never mentioned a past husband. Moreover, Spencer’s arrival couldn’t come at a worse time because Abby’s relationship with Jake has been strengthening throughout Season 3. Jake had intended to propose in “A Decent Proposal,” but he keeps getting interrupted. He confides in Dan, who informs Abby, who had been eagerly anticipating Jake’s proposal when Spencer walks in.
This creates quite the complicated narrative tangle. With “Night Court’s” future still uncertain, it’s a significant cliffhanger for viewers. However, if the sitcom earns a Season 4 renewal, Melissa Rauch assures fans that these unresolved plotlines will be addressed promptly.
Melissa Rauch says Simon Helberg will be back for Season 4
Melissa Rauch has vowed that Simon Helberg will be back for multiple episodes to wrap up Spencer and Abby’s story, should “Night Court” be renewed for Season 4. “This wouldn’t just be a one-off assignment. He would come back in and we can really do an arc for the storyline, and not only reveal what the story is behind what we saw in the finale, but sort of move forward,” she told The Wrap.
Might Abby end up caught between two lovers? Fans may or may not find out, but at the moment Rauch remains optimistic about Season 4. She mentions that in addition to solving the Spencer and Abby tangle, she wants to add on to the major “The Big Bang Theory” reunions that have been happening regularly on “Night Court,” plus has plans for Dan and Julianne’s (Wendie Malick) newfound friendship, Wyatt’s (Nyambi Nyambi) job advancement and Gurgs’ (Lacretta) new status as head bailiff.
“All these characters have such rich inner life, and I’m really excited for the opportunity to dive more into all their stories, and then, of course, how all their relationships play into that,” Rauch said. Now fans just have to wait and watch to see if she gets the opportunity to do so.
