Why We Likely Won't See A Jack Reacher Movie With Alan Ritchson

Alan Ritchson transformed from a relatively obscure actor to a well-known name when he landed the lead in Prime Video’s “Reacher,” a weekly crime series adapted from Lee Child’s thrill-packed novels. Although the story had previously been turned into two movies with Tom Cruise, the series hit a snag after the 2012 film “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” underperformed compared to the first “Jack Reacher” film.

Following this, the decision was made to shift Jack Reacher’s adventures to a television format. Now on the verge of its fourth season, “Reacher” has emerged as one of Prime Video’s top successes. This success raises the question of whether the creators might try returning the character to the big screen. However, when asked by Men’s Journal, Ritchson expressed that the small screen feels like the right fit for Reacher.

“I can’t speak to movies,” he stated to the publication. “The structure we have is fantastic, adapting a book each season. Eight episodes seem the perfect span for unfolding a novel.” Ritchson highlighted that squeezing an entire book into a two-hour film often doesn’t do it justice, which could explain why the series has received better reviews than the Cruise-led films.

Don’t break Reacher if it ain’t broke

There’s wisdom in maintaining a successful formula without unnecessary changes. Often, the best advice when things are going smoothly is to maintain the current course. Alan Ritchson, star of “Reacher,” seems to abide by this principle.

“I’m not sure I’d push for movies,” Ritchson mentioned to Men’s Journal. “I enjoy the flexibility of crafting content that feels like multiple films through the year with ‘Reacher.'” As he sees it, there’s no reason to alter what’s working, saying, “I’m satisfied with how things stand.”

Nevertheless, it might be tough for Amazon’s financial planners to completely dismiss the idea. Many television series have released films during their runs, so why not “Reacher”? If the studio decides to pursue this path, it sounds like they might need to persuade their lead actor to join in.
