Contains spoilers for “King of the Hill” Season 14, Episode 5 — “New Ref In Town”

Hank Hill once strongly disliked soccer as a sport. In the “Three Coaches and a Bobby” episode from Season 3, he openly criticized it as less masculine compared to American football and was disheartened by Bobby’s interest in the game. However, in “New Ref in Town,” we discover that his time in Saudi Arabia led him to watch soccer, which dramatically changed his view on the sport, though he’s embarrassed to share this change of heart.

Initially, Hank hides his newfound interest by coaching for Luke Jr.’s team, putting him at odds with Boomhauer. When Peggy finds out, it intriguingly enhances their private lives as they keep it a secret. Meanwhile, Dale notices Hank’s new enthusiasm and, believing Saudi Arabia influenced him, persuades Bill to join him in kidnapping “this” Hank to search for what they think is the “real” Hank.

Ultimately, Hank proudly embraces his identity as a soccer fan — a development consistent with his ability to open up to new ideas throughout the show.

Hank isn’t always closed-minded about things

Hank may never fully embrace cooking on charcoal, but he’s adapted to various concepts over the series. This includes Bobby’s interests in culinary arts and rap music, as well as environmental conservation. However, he hasn’t supported all of Bobby’s pursuits, such as his modeling ambitions or exploration of Wicca. Generally though, if presented with a logical perspective, Hank is likely to reconsider his stance. This openness seems to have continued from the original series into its entertaining revival.

Throughout the series, Hank has demonstrated an ability to shift his perspectives on many things. Yet on certain issues — such as disapproval of abuse, advocating for respect towards women, and his unwavering support for the Dallas Cowboys — his convictions remain steadfast. Nevertheless, being adaptable is valuable, and Hank’s newfound passion for soccer exemplifies his flexible nature.

Curious about more updates on the latest season of “King of the Hill?” The show includes a touching tribute to the late Brittany Murphy and Tom Petty in a subtle and heartwarming manner.
