Originally, Netflix planned for “The Witcher” to span seven seasons. However, the series will now conclude after five seasons, with a different actor taking the lead role. Starting October 30, 2025, Liam Hemsworth will replace Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in the fourth season. Cavill initially agreed to participate in all seven seasons, so why the change? According to showrunner Lauren Hissrich in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cavill wanted to pursue other projects. Hissrich noted, “You don’t want to hold someone and force them to do something they aren’t passionate about, which made this decision feel mutual.”
The announcement of Hemsworth replacing Cavill stirred strong reactions from fans, with many feeling “The Witcher” should have ended after Season 3. Nevertheless, Cavill soon expressed his support for Hemsworth, describing him as a “fantastic” actor in a statement. “As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men,” he shared on Instagram. “Enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find, Liam,” he added. Despite Cavill’s gracious message, the recast news led many fans to abandon “The Witcher.”
Did leaving The Witcher backfire on Henry Cavill?
What were Cavill’s other priorities? It appears no coincidence that Cavill departed “The Witcher” as he announced a return to his role as Superman. He famously portrayed the superhero in the DC Extended Universe, but hadn’t been in the cape since 2017’s “Justice League,” which faced financial losses. Fans were eager for his return, though hopes were dashed, leaving audiences disappointed.
Cavill reprised his Superman role with a cameo in 2022’s “Black Adam,” teasing a future clash with the titular character. Unfortunately, that showdown never materialized. Just a month after “Black Adam,” James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios and planned a comprehensive reboot, introducing a new Superman with David Corenswet as Clark Kent. This marked the end of Cavill’s era as the Man of Steel.
The announcement was unexpected for many, including Cavill. “After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life,” Cavill commented in an Instagram post. He acknowledged the change, “The changing of the guard is part of life. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build, and I wish them all the best.” Like with his exit from “The Witcher,” Cavill remained courteous. He is now focused on Prime Video’s “Highlander” reboot, where he will portray the immortal swordsman Connor MacLeod.
