The remains of two South Carolina women were discovered in the Rembert area of Sumter County, and at least one death has been attributed to a gunshot wound.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office commenced a homicide investigation following the August 8 discovery of the bodies of Kristen N. Grissom, 38, from North Charleston, and Christine Marie McAbee, 35, of Walterboro.
A landowner stumbled upon the bodies in a clearing, prompting deputies to arrive at approximately 1:17 p.m. on Richbow Road. “The bodies appeared to have been placed at the location,” the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office noted in a news release.
These deaths seem to be an isolated incident, and no present threat to the public has been detected, stated Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis.
Dennis has asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to help with the investigation.
What happened to Kristen Grissom and Christine McAbee?
An autopsy confirmed that McAbee succumbed to a gunshot wound, according to South Carolina’s WIS-TV. As of the afternoon of Aug. 12, the autopsy for Grissom was still ongoing, with officials providing updates at a press conference at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
The women were believed to have been deceased for approximately a day prior to the discovery of their bodies, authorities noted, as reported by CBS News. Identification was made through tattoos, fingerprints, and DNA analysis.
While McAbee’s death is being investigated as a homicide, Grissom’s death is being investigated as a potential homicide until the autopsy is complete.
Dennis said that the women knew each other, though details were not provided.
He added at the press conference that several tips have come in on the case, but didn’t say whether investigators had a suspect yet.
