Fans of a forgotten Joaquin Phoenix film have been left stunned after realizing it eerily predicted the rise of AI in the future.
Spike Jonze film, Her, released in 2013, tells the tale of a man falling in love with a software program.
Phoenix portrays Theodore Twombly, an isolated divorcee who becomes captivated by a cutting-edge operating system on his computer (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) set in the year 2025.
Samantha is sympathetic, funny, insightful – and soon he is spending more and more time talking to her.
With the current proliferation of artificial intelligence chatbots like ChatGPT causing people to form emotional attachments to AI, the plot of Her has left fans unsettled by its foresight into technology’s evolution.
A social media commentator remarked: ‘Pretty crazy how Her (2013) accurately predicted fashion and strange relationships with AI girlfriends in 2025, the year the film is set.’

Viewers of a lesser-known Joaquin Phoenix movie have been taken aback upon noticing its uncanny prediction of AI’s future impact – Phoenix as seen in 2016’s Her.
Others commented: ‘Her truly illustrates the rapid transformation of our connections with technology. It prompts reflection on how we will protect our digital identities in the times to come.’
‘It used to be sci fi, now it’s just a drama
‘Going to rewatch this just to see how surreal it is.
‘It’s happening.
‘Damn. They knew Ai would be the s**t in 2025 actually. Only thing is ai doesn’t have scarlets voice lol.
‘Ya now it’s reality.’
Phoenix once shared with the Daily Mail about the celebrated film: ‘It’s a relationship movie but it challenges the perception of love and reality and explores their meanings.’
‘I like it when my character says to Amy, “Do you think I can handle a real relationship?” And she says, “Isn’t this real to you?”

Phoenix plays Theodore Twombly, a lonely divorcee who becomes beguiled by a new, advanced operating system for his computer (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) in the year 2025

In the present day where the use of artificial intelligence chatbots including ChatGPT has risen, with people even falling in love with AI, fans have been spooked by Her’s ahead of the curve storyline

Phoenix previously told the Daily Mail of the acclaimed film: ‘It’s a relationship movie but it makes you think about the subjectivity of love and reality and what that is’
‘And it is real to him. I love that idea because I think there are a lot of relationships we can look at right now among humans where you might say, “That’s not a real relationship”. It’s subjective and to Theodore this is real.
‘Also, it deals with things that are specific to relationships that I think everybody can identify with, things that we’ve all experienced.
‘He thinks he’s in love but then he doubts it and while he’s doubting it he gets jealous of Samantha.
‘I read it and I was like “Wow, you don’t even see this stuff in relationship movies with humans!”
