Graeme Souness and Roy Keane both agree that Naby Keita should have been sent off for his horror challenge on Jesse Lingard during Liverpool’s win over Manchester United.
The Reds thrashed United 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday night, courtesy of goals from Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane and a brace from Mohamed Salah, with Jurgen Klopp’s side now top of the Premier League, a point ahead of Manchester City, but having played a game more than the Citizens.
It was a routine win for Liverpool, who were completely imperious against a lacklustre United team, but the home side could, and perhaps should, have finished the game a man down.
Keita was subbed on with just 10 minutes to go and just after Salah scored the fourth goal in the 85th minute, the midfielder made a late, crunching tackle on Jesse Lingard and was instantly shown a yellow card.
But Souness and Keane, Sky Sports’ pundits for the match, argued that the referee got it wrong.
Former Liverpool midfielder Souness said: ‘It’s a red card all day. I think Keita’s got very luck and Liverpool have got very lucky there.
‘It wouldn’t have affected the score but this is a sending off. He gets away with that one.’
Former United midfielder and captain Keane agreed, adding: ‘It wouldn’t have affected the score but it would have been a suspension. That’s the frustration. That’s a red card.’
Klopp will be breathing a huge sigh of relief that the Guinean will be available for the Red’s congested, upcoming fixtures, as the club chases an unprecedented quadruple of trophies.
Liverpool’s next game is on Sunday, where they face Merseyside derby opponents Everton in the Premier League.
