Bruno Fernandes is impressed with Donny van de Beek’s hard work over the summer as the Dutchman hopes a new stronger physique can see him muscle his way into the Manchester United first team.

Van de Beek arrived at Old Trafford last summer from Ajax for a fee of £35m, possibly rising to £40m with add-ons and with plenty of fanfare after impressing for the Dutch club and the Netherlands national team.

However, things have not worked out well for him in England so far, struggling to make any kind of impact in the United first team.

The 24-year-old made just four Premier League starts over the last campaign, scoring on his debut but that remains his only goal for the Red Devils.

It was a painfully underwhelming first season at the club for the midfielder but he is taking matters into his own hands and has spent the summer perfecting a new fitness regime which has seen him pack on the muscle.

Fernandes, who is a guaranteed started under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has been impressed with his work in the gym, but also his quality on the field.

‘Yes he’s working hard and working hard in the gym,’ Fernandes told Manchester United’s official website. ‘Obviously he is one of the quality players we know and now he’s building up.’

Fernandes is not the only United player to be impressed by Van de Beek’s work in the gym, with Harry Maguire commenting on a post which saw the Dutchman pulling on the captain’s armband in a friendly.

The England star Wrote: ‘Don’t stretch that armband @Donnyvdbeek!’

Fernandes will be looking forward to try and push champions Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table this season, having seen Jadon Sancho arrive at Old Trafford and Raphael Varane about to join as well.

For now he is just happy to be back in training, though, and has praised the atmosphere in camp after the summer break.

‘As a professional player you always prepare for your season before you come back for training, you always do something before and I think everyone was doing their jobs at home,’ he said.

‘I’m happy to see how everyone is, how happy they are to be back and they are training really hard.’

Manchester United get their Premier League campaign underway at home against Leeds United on Saturday 14 August.
