Atletico Madrid have revived talks with Tottenham over a loan deal for midfielder Pierre Emile Hojbjerg with an obligation to buy.

Talks are ongoing over a fee around £40million.

Manchester United have also been linked with a move for Hojbjerg in the remaining days of the transfer window.

Hojbjerg hasn’t been the first name on United’s shortlist but could be braced for a late move after the club were offered the chance to open talks over a deal, as reported by the Telegraph.

Tottenham signed the Denmark international in a £20m deal from Southampton three years ago under the guidance of former manager Jose Mourinho.

However, new boss Ange Postecoglou is willing to let Hojbjerg depart along with several other first-team starts including England international Eric Dier.

The 28-year-old was previously set to join Atletico Madrid after negotiations were opened between the two clubs before eventually breaking down.

There was also interest from Saudi Arabia – who have made a habit of recruiting Premier League talent – but Hojbjerg wanted to remain in European football.

Spurs manager Postecoglou favours a midfield three of Yves Bissouma, James Maddison and Pape Sarr, meaning Hojbjerg has struggled to gain minutes so far this season.

Hojbjerg has made just two substitute appearances in the Premier League this season, although he did start Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie against Fulham, which Tottenham lost on penalties.
