Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has mocked Ralf Rangnick’s claim that the Red Devils ‘controlled the game’ in their 2-2 draw against Aston Villa.

The Red Devils were 2-0 up against Steven Gerrard’s side with less than 13 minutes remaining at Villa Park but they were pegged back thanks to goals from Jacob Ramsey and Philippe Coutinho.

Rangnick was understandably angered at his side’s complacency but he did praise the majority of their performance, claiming they ‘controlled the game’.

However, Villa had 55% possession at Villa Park, which increased to 65% in the second half.

And Hargreaves was quick to dispute Rangnick’s claim, insisting that United have only ‘controlled’ one match under the German and that came in his opening victory against Crystal Palace.

‘Ralf Rangnick said they had ‘control of the game’ but look at the stats!’ Hargreaves told Premier League Productions.

‘I mean 45% possession…is that ‘having control’?

‘In the second half they only had 35% possession so I mean that’s not good enough.

‘In terms of the scoreline you look at 2-0 and you think you’ve got control but actually United [didn’t have control].

‘I haven’t seen them have control of any game so far outside of the first one against Crystal Palace.’

United take on Brentford in west London on Wednesday, after their clash was postponed in early December.

Cristiano Ronaldo hopes to return to the starting line-up after he missed the draw against Villa.

Marcus Rashford missed the draw with a dead leg but is also expected to return.
