Foden and Grealish are nearing returns from slight injuries, but Guardiola will be without Kevin De Bruyne on Wednesday after his positive Covid test and Aymeric Laporte due to suspension.
‘We are in an emergency in the squad. We have few, few, people,’ Guardiola told a press conference on Tuesday.
‘Aymer is out, we have to come back. Never complain the players who are out with injuries, red cards. I trust a lot all the squad, if one is out another comes.
‘December is the toughest month, we have few players. Kevin is back but needs time to be fit. All the people who had Covid say it drains them and Kevin needs to be fit and time to show his form.
‘Phil and Jack are still in the same situation, maybe tomorrow they can play but not a lot of minutes. We are going to see after they train today and the rest we have just 14, 15, players. We are in a difficult position because a lot of players play a lot of minutes.
It seems surprising that Manchester City have been pushed into an ’emergency’ situation with this amount of injury and suspension, given the money that has been spent on their squad.
They do seem short in midfield and attack, though, with Guardiola naming two goalkeepers on the bench against West Ham at the weekend and youngster Cole Palmer and James McAtee.
