River Plate plan to offer Edinson Cavani a two-year contract to tempt him to join on a free transfer from Manchester United at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old’s deal at Old Trafford comes to an end at the end of this campaign and he is not expected to extend his stay in the Premier League.

A return to South America is now a strong possibility for the Uruguayan veteran and something that has been inadvertently brought about by Manchester City.

The Premier League chmapions have agreed a deal to sign 21-year-old hot prospect Julian Alvarez from River Plate, with the striker moving to the Etihad in the summer.

River will need to replace the youngster and the Sun report that they are willing to pay the bulk of Cavani’s wage demands, which stretch to £250,000-a-week.

Cavani had been linked with a return to South America in the summer, but chose to stay at Old Trafford for another season, although this campaign has been disrupted by illness and injury.

The former PSG superstar has made just five Premier League starts this season and scored two league goals, finding it harder to get into the starting XI since the re-signing of Cristiano Ronaldo by United.

He has also been linked with a move to Boca Juniors and a switch to Barcelona, but River Plate now appear to be at the front of the queue.

The deal to take Alvarez to City has been done, with the Argentina international being loaned back to River Plate until July, linking up with his new side in the summer.
