BBC doctor says 68p home remedy could cut your cold by two days

BBC Morning Live’s resident GP Oscar Duke has shared an affordable 68p kitchen essential that could alleviate cold and flu symptoms. In a broadcast last year, the health expert informed presenters Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton that ordinary table salt – which you can buy for just 68p at Tesco – can provide ‘instant relief’ without requiring a visit to the pharmacy.

Most leading supermarkets, including Asda and Waitrose, sell table salt for under £1. Dr. Duke emphasized to viewers that while there is no cure for common cold viruses, managing symptoms is crucial.

“Most treatments are aimed at reducing discomfort as the virus passes,” he noted. “It’s important to understand that current remedies do not remove the virus but might help ease symptoms.”

However, he recommended: “Saltwater drops can reduce symptom duration by about two days.”

For making saltwater at home, he suggests combining three teaspoons of salt with one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in cooled boiled water, as reported by Gloucestershire Live.

“Mix one teaspoon of this into 250 ml of water, roughly a cup,” he continued. “The solution can be used with a spray, dropper, or even by inhaling from the palm to aid in loosening secretions.”

Dr Duke highlighted a recent study that revealed the science behind salt water’s advantages.

The BBC doctor detailed: “A recent Edinburgh study involving about 400 children examined the impact of saltwater drops on cold symptoms.”

“The study found that using saltwater drops could reduce the duration of symptoms by approximately two days. However, it is important to note that the virus itself is likely still present.

“The saltwater may help clear some of the mucus that contributes to discomfort.”

According to the NHS, cold symptoms develop gradually over two to three days.

The main symptoms include:

  • a blocked or runny nose
  • sneezing
  • a sore throat
  • a hoarse voice
  • a cough
  • feeling tired and unwell

You may also have:

  • a high temperature
  • aching muscles
  • a loss of taste and smell
  • a feeling of pressure in your ears and face

Alongside saltwater, Dr Duke suggests honey, which is referenced in national guidelines as a potentially useful treatment for cold symptoms.

A study discovered a night-time dose of honey can ease symptoms; it can also be mixed into hot beverages.

The BBC doctor also states: “Chicken soup has also been the subject of considerable research. Studies suggest it may aid in clearing mucus from the respiratory airways.

“Homemade chicken soup is believed to be more effective than store-bought versions.”

Eating nourishing foods like chicken soup can be one of the most advantageous methods for managing cold symptoms.
