A neuroscientist suggests that blending coffee with a natural ingredient from green tea can alleviate headaches, enhance concentration, and minimize caffeine-induced restlessness. Dr. Ramon Velazquez from Arizona State University explains that this simple adjustment to your coffee routine can boost focus, calm your mind, and even ease headaches.
Dr. Velazquez, affiliated with Mind Lab Pro, states: “Many believe caffeine acts independently, yet it can be more effective when paired with natural compounds. That’s where it gets exciting.”
He further explains: “The brain itself doesn’t experience pain, explaining why patients can be conscious during brain surgery. Headaches occur due to the stretching of surrounding tissues. Caffeine helps restrict blood flow, contracting these tissues and relieving pain. It’s a natural cognitive enhancer when used appropriately.”
But the neuroscientist insists that the real magic happens when you combine caffeine with another natural ingredient: L-theanine.
He continues: “Combining caffeine with L-theanine results in a potent mix. Caffeine provides energy, while L-theanine eases the nervousness, greatly enhancing concentration.”
L-theanine is an amino acid present in tea leaves, notably in green tea, and some mushrooms. Unlike other calming compounds, it doesn’t induce drowsiness. Instead, it elevates neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, fostering calm alertness.
“It’s about being more than just awake; it’s about being attentive and clear-minded. This combination is highly effective for work, study, or creative ventures,” Dr. Velazquez notes.
Research backs him up. Studies have shown that L-theanine helps improve attention and working memory, particularly when taken with caffeine. Many nootropic supplements now combine the two.
“What you need is controlled, focused energy. That’s what L-theanine and caffeine together provide,” says Dr. Velazquez.
And if you want to take things even further, the neuroscientist suggests another natural boost: omega-3 fatty acids. Found in fish oil and chia seeds, they’ve been linked to improved brain health and concentration. “Omega-3s support the physical structure of brain cells. Pairing them with caffeine and L-theanine creates an environment where your brain can operate at its best,” he explains.
The result, according to Dr. Velazquez, is a three-pronged approach to brainpower: caffeine to energise, L-theanine to calm and focus, and omega-3s to support long-term cognitive health. “Think of it as tuning an instrument. You don’t just want to turn up the volume, you want clarity, balance, and staying power,” he says.
