Motorists flock to tiny growers mart selling city's cheapest fuel

Australia’s regional petrol stations are often the first to feel the brunt of petrol price spikes, but an hour out of Perth‘s metropolitan area, one independent retailer is bucking the trend.

Kelvin ‘Blue’ Inder-Smith, a nonconformist in the petrol retail industry, has gained attention by offering the most affordable diesel in the city and the second-lowest price for unleaded petrol as of yesterday.

Western Australian motorists are travelling up to an hour to fill up their tanks at Chidlow Growers Mart, 46 kilometres west of the Perth CBD.

Unleaded U91 is currently priced at $2.30 per liter at his station, making it more than 16 cents cheaper than the state average and just a cent higher than the least expensive option available in Perth.

Diesel, which has experienced significant price increases and supply chain challenges since the onset of the conflict in Iran, is available at his station for $2.74 per liter—the lowest price in Perth.

In contrast, the average diesel price in Perth was $2.953 per liter yesterday.

When asked by 9News about his pricing strategy, Inder-Smith expressed his preference to be “a good Aussie” rather than capitalize on the struggles of fellow Australians.

“Fuel is like air,” he remarked to 9News, underscoring the essential nature of affordable fuel.

“You have got to use it – it shouldn’t be regulated by people who just want to make a profit out of poor buggers.”

Local customer Eddie Pulich said it was “great” to see.

“I’m not sure what sort of a profit margin they end up with, but any saving is better than no saving at all,” he said.

‘Blue’ doesn’t know when he will next get a fuel delivery, and when he does, he might have no choice but to hike prices.

“It’s not a nice thing to see struggling people, and I would rather help than poke them with a stick.”
