Cleaning expert says you can wash duvet every fortnight on one condition

If you’re someone who washes their duvet every single week, savouring the feel of the fresh sheets when you’re freshly showered, one expert has shared that you could actually be doing it too often.

Ann Russell, who regularly shares cleaning and life advice on TikTok, recently answered a query from one of her followers. Someone admitted they were washing their sheets every two days, but were concerned they may be going overboard with the frequency.

She said it “depends,” much like everything else. So, if you’re a “calm sleeper” and you don’t “sweat a lot,” you can “probably change your duvet cover every fortnight and your undersheet every week”.

However, if you’re a “very hot, sweaty, thrashy sleeper,” she recommended that you “might want to do it more often”.

Ann also said that she knows people who barely move when they’re in bed. If that’s you, she advised you can “probably do two to three weeks” without changing them.

She also said it “depends what you’re happy with” – because “if you’re quite happy to live in a slightly messy bed, you can make it longer”.

But she did say if you want people to “share your bed, you’ve got to make it clean and inviting”.

Ann warned that if you have acne, or a similar skin condition, you may want to “change your sheets more often,” including your pillowcase.

She shared that there’s a big difference between “a house that has two dogs, two children, and a couple of teenagers and they live a very busy life in and out all the time, and a single professional couple who get home at half past seven at night, eat their dinner, go to bed, and get up the next morning and leave”.

“There’s a huge amount of variation in terms of how dirty everything gets,” she continued.

She said there’s “not one answer” to this question, and it does depend on you, your preferences, and how you sleep.

Ann said you should just “do what makes you feel comfortable,” so if washing your sheets every two days keeps you happy, then you should do it.

She also highlighted you shouldn’t “stress about what other people are doing”.

“If your home is comfortable and feels comfortable and safe for you, and it is safe, then it’ll do,” she finished the video by sharing.

Ann’s video has garnered more than 4,000 likes – and plenty of people took to the comments section to leave their thoughts.

One said: “I just wash mine when they don’t feel clean anymore to be honest.” And another gushed: “Ann, I swear I come to you for advice more than own mother… she didn’t teach me this.”
