What’s causing your cough? GP explains difference between Covid and flu

As winter approaches, more people in the UK are experiencing coughs and sneezes, with recent UK Health Security Agency data revealing a 33% rise in flu-related hospital admissions. Distinguishing between flu, Covid, and other illnesses, however, remains a challenge.

According to GP Dr. Babak Ashram, differentiating these illnesses by symptoms alone can be tricky due to their similarities. He stated, “The definitive way to identify the virus is through testing. However, Covid often results in a loss or alteration in taste and smell, persistent fatigue, muscle soreness, and occasionally, difficulty breathing.”

Dr. Ashram noted that flu symptoms tend to appear abruptly, with individuals feeling well one day and completely exhausted the next.

Typical flu symptoms include high fever, chills, headaches, and body aches, while colds are generally milder, affecting primarily the head area with symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing, and a sore throat.

Dr. Ashrafi highlighted that both Covid and flu pose greater health risks to older adults and those with preexisting health conditions.

Working with Superdrug Online Doctor, Dr. Ashrafi emphasized, “This winter, we may see both viruses circulating simultaneously, which could strain healthcare systems and increase the likelihood of contracting one virus while still recovering from another.”

“The good news is that vaccines, good hygiene, and small protective measures can significantly reduce your risk.”

Dr Ashrafi recommended taking small steps to reduce your risk of infection, such as staying up to date with free NHS flu and Covid vaccinations if eligible.

He added: “Washing your hands regularly, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when you feel unwell help reduce spread.

“If you’re in a busy indoor setting, wearing a mask adds an extra layer of protection.

“These small habits not only safeguard you but also help keep vulnerable people safe during peak winter illness season.”
