Renowned for his portrayals of stern authority figures in the iconic films “Back to the Future” and “Top Gun,” James Tolkan has passed away at the age of 94.

According to his booking agent, John Alcantar, Tolkan died on Thursday in Lake Placid, New York, where he resided. While a tribute on the “Back to the Future” website mentioned that he passed away “peacefully,” the cause of death was not disclosed.

In “Back to the Future,” Tolkan brought to life the no-nonsense vice principal Gerald Strickland, known for patrolling the corridors of the fictional Hill Valley High School, frequently clashing with the character Marty McFly, portrayed by Michael J. Fox.

With a memorable line in the 1985 classic, Tolkan’s character reprimands McFly, declaring, “You’ve got a real attitude problem, McFly. You’re a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here. He was a slacker, too.”

Fans also remember Tolkan’s role in “Top Gun” as the stern commanding officer Tom “Stinger” Jardian. In a notable scene towards the film’s conclusion, Jardian inquires about Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s, played by Tom Cruise, future plans. Mitchell expresses his desire to become a Top Gun instructor, to which Jardian responds with a chuckle, “God help us.”

“God help us,” Tolkan’s character replies, laughing.

Born in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan served in the Navy during the Korean War and eventually made his way to New York, where he spent a quarter century acting in theater roles. He was a member of the original ensemble cast of “Glengarry Glen Ross.”

Tolkan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee Welles.
