Residents in the UK experiencing back pain may qualify for a Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit that provides up to £187 per week. This benefit, known as the Personal Independence Payment (PIP), is designed to assist individuals under the State Pension age who are dealing with long-term physical or mental health issues, or disabilities that affect their daily living or mobility.

The DWP has identified a list of 178 medical conditions that can qualify individuals for PIP, with back pain being one of them. For those whose back pain significantly hampers their mobility or ability to carry out everyday tasks, such as eating, financial support of up to £187.45 weekly may be available. The exact amount is determined by the extent of difficulty experienced.

Individuals who struggle with routine activities like preparing meals, eating, or personal hygiene may be eligible for the ‘daily living’ component of PIP. This component offers a weekly payment of £73.90 at the lower rate and £110.40 at the higher rate.

For those who have trouble moving around, leaving their home, or navigating routes, the ‘mobility’ component is available. This provides £29.20 at the lower rate and £77.05 at the higher rate.

PIP payments are issued every four weeks. Those qualifying for both enhanced components receive a total of £749.80 every four weeks, equating to £187.45 per week.

For individuals eligible for the standard rates of both the daily living and mobility components, the payment amounts to £412.40 every four weeks, providing an additional £103.10 per week.

In April 2026, the DWP will increase benefit payments by 3.8%, which also impacts PIP. The daily living component will rise to £114.60 per week for the enhanced rate, and £76.70 for the standard rate.

The mobility component will rise to £80 per week for the higher rate, and £30.30 for the lower rate.
