Doctor says watch out for this in your collagen supplement

Many people around the world take collagen supplements to look and feel younger. But, one doctor has claimed there’s an important piece of information everyone should consider when it comes to collagen.

Dr Asif Ahmed, a British GP, claimed that collagen supplements might hold some benefits following scientific studies. But, he warned that anyone thinking of (or already) taking this supplement should be aware of side effects and possible dangers.

He looked over various scientific reviews, which combed through a range of studies that have already been completed about the potential benefits. Some found that proper supplementation “increased skin elasticity and hydration.”

One review found that these results were not just temporary, adding: “These results stayed in place even 30 days after stopping the supplements.” Beyond just looks, some studies focused on the internal benefits of increased collagen supplements for older people experiencing joint pain.

However, the doctor did issue a word of warning for anyone looking to add this type of supplement to their daily routine. He stressed how important it was to make sure you were consuming the right kind of collagen.

He said: “There was a large-scale investigation done looking at 20 to 30 companies. They were all found to have heavy metals like lead, arsenic and mercury. Now, this in itself is not dangerous, there are normal foods out that have these [in them] – but they have to be at a certain level.

“However, the supplement industry is not regulated. Therefore, these heavy metals, if they are in a supplement, there’s no way you’ll find out unless the company does a third party testing to state that they’re clear on any contaminants and thier product has what is says it should have in it.

“I think collagen supplementation can help – it is completely up to you and your budget. The key thing is finding a product that has no contaminants in it and is pure.”

You can find various collagen products available online and in stores from multiple well-known companies such as Amazon, Holland and Barrett and Boots. As stressed by the doctor, it is always important to read the labels and do thorough research before taking anything.

Should I be taking a collagen supplement?

Taking any supplement will depend on individual needs and goals. For some people, a collagen supplement might be beneficial but it could have little effect on others.

Collagen is a major structural protein in skin, providing elasticity and firmness. Supplements may help improve skin hydration, elasticity and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Collagen is also a key component of cartilage, which cushions joints. Collagen supplementation may help support joint health and reduce pain.

You might consider a collagen supplement around the age of 30 if you’re concerned about potential early signs of ageing. This is when our bodies begin to slow down the natural production of collagen around this decade, so supplementing can help counteract this.

It’s never too late to start taking collagen, but starting earlier may help prevent or delay the appearance of signs of ageing. Before starting any new supplement, it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor to ensure it’s safe and appropriate for your individual needs.
