As we head into the season known for bugs and viruses, many people might find themselves struggling with a stubborn cough. If this sounds like you, it’s time to listen up because ITV’s Dr. Amir Khan has shared some essential health tips to help you out.

The popular GP, who regularly dispenses health advice on TV, recently posted a video on Instagram offering insights for those dealing with a cough. He advises that by observing your body and symptoms closely, you can determine what might be at the root of your issue.

He highlighted that not all coughs are the same and pointed out a specific warning sign to be aware of. This comes after previous advice from GPs regarding what actions to take if you have worrisome cough symptoms.

Dr. Amir explained that a dry, tickly cough without any phlegm is generally caused by a viral infection such as a cold or the flu. However, he also mentioned that this might be a symptom of conditions like asthma, acid reflux, or even certain medications for blood pressure.

On the other hand, if your cough produces phlegm or mucus, it suggests that your lungs are “trying to clear something.” This type of cough is usually linked to chest infections, bronchitis, or long-term illnesses like COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

Dr. Amir has issued a serious alert regarding coughs that worsen at night, mentioning: “A cough that’s typically more severe at night could be a sign. Postnasal drip from allergies or sinuses tends to make you cough when lying down. Asthma may also act up at night, and acid reflux often occurs when stomach acid creeps up while you’re asleep.

“Number four, a persistent cough. Now, if your cough lasts for more than three weeks, it’s time to get it checked. Most often, it’s lingering after an infection, or due to asthma, but we also need to think about conditions like tuberculosis and, in rare cases, even lung cancer.

“And finally five, red flag coughs. If you’re coughing up blood, if you have a cough with unexplained weight loss, chest pain or breathlessness, then these are red flags and you need to see your doctor urgently.”

The video has since gone viral, racking up over 2,000 views, with many praising the advice given. One viewer expressed their gratitude, saying: “Thank you so much for recording Amir. As always, invaluable information and advice.”

Another queried: “Is there such a thing as a seasonal cough? I get one this time every year that lasts for ages. I’ve been to the GP, have been tested for asthma, but nothing.”

A third chimed in with: “Brilliant as ever. I always have a dry cough at bedtime, so annoying!” Meanwhile, a fourth shared: “Had my cough for over a year-and-a-half following numerous tests.

“Doctors can’t find anything, but it’s constant, especially at night! Now where does one go from here?” Another person added: “Very informative, as always.”

While coughs are common and usually resolve over time, if you’re worried about your cough or need additional advice, it’s best to consult your GP.
