This time of year, many individuals find themselves struggling with sore throats and runny noses. While searching for an effective remedy can be challenging, television doctor Dr. Hilary Jones has recently identified an unexpected food that might offer relief for throat discomfort.
Although honey has long been recognized for alleviating cold symptoms, Manuka honey is particularly beneficial. It boasts high levels of Methylglyoxal (MGO), a compound celebrated for its antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, making it effective in combating bacteria and infections. The latest Covid variants, Stratus and Nimbus, frequently result in a symptom referred to as “razor blade throats”—a severe, painful soreness that has proven stubborn to treat, according to a report from the Mirror.
Dr. Hilary suggests that Manuka honey, a simple pantry staple, could lessen the severity of this symptom. He stated, “The current NHS Covid advice recommends a teaspoon of honey for a razor blade sore throat. I advocate for Manuka honey due to its soothing texture and distinctive antibacterial qualities, which can ease sore throats and support quicker recovery, all while leaving a pleasant taste in the mouth.”
Customers can find Manuka honey products at Manuka Doctor, a brand Dr. Hilary has been associated with for nearly a decade, with prices starting at £5.25. The product range is extensive, including squeezy honey, jars, and special bundles designed to alleviate the symptoms of colds, flu, and Covid.
For instance, Manuka Doctor’s Immunity Bundle is currently reduced to £19.50 from £27.50. This bundle includes Manuka honey lozenges, Immune Defence Spray, Immune Defence Syrup, and High Strength Vitamin D Capsules. Additionally, the 100 MGO Twin Pack Squeezy Honey is available for £11.70, down from £14.70, offering two bottles of high-quality Manuka honey rich in antioxidants and antibacterial properties.
Shoppers can also purchase the Manuka Lozenges separately, with a triple pack priced at £10.00, slightly reduced from £10.50. These soothing Manuka honey and lemon lozenges with zinc provide relief for sore throats while delivering a delightful taste.
However, other brands also stock Manuka honey products. At Tesco, there’s the Hilltop Premium Manuka Honey 250+ MGO 225g jar for £12, which is made from 100% genuine New Zealand Manuka.
For anyone looking for a smaller sample to try it out, the Egmont Honey Manuka Honey MGO 40+ 40g jar is available for just £2 at Holland and Barrett. It’s described as ‘a rich complex tasting honey’ boasting antibacterial benefits.
Manuka Doctor’s range has attracted some devoted customers. One customer said: “I took Manuka honey every day during my episode of Covid. My sore throat improved, as did my recovery.”
Another commented: “Just love the strong taste, especially with Greek yoghurt. When I recently had COVID, I was having a tsp every day, very soothing for my throat.”
However, some shoppers have expressed a preference for jars of honey over squeezy bottles. One customer commented on the Manuka Doctor website: “I much prefer the jar, in the squeezy bottle it doesn’t seem like the same consistency, it might just be me.”
Another customer praised the Manuka Lozenges, stating: “Good size, quite lemony. Felt it didn’t need as much sugar. The manuka is sufficient.” Another said the they have a “lovely lemon taste with a proper honey centre that soothes the throat.”
