A doctor has shared his simple “10-second” morning ritual we should all do every day to help prepare us for the day ahead. According to the expert, this habit can help “flush out toxins”, improve digestion, and even improve focus and memory.

In a world filled with intricate wellness routines and complex health advice, one physician is advocating for a straightforward, yet surprisingly effective morning habit that takes just a few seconds. Dr. Amir Khan, a familiar face from ITV, has highlighted a simple daily practice that anyone can incorporate to kickstart their day with vigor.

Through a video shared on his Instagram account, Dr. Amir recommended drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning, before engaging in any other activities. This seemingly modest practice, he explained, can significantly aid in flushing out toxins, enhancing digestion, and even boosting concentration and memory.

“Every morning, before I indulge in my first cup of coffee, I make sure to down a full glass of water,” Dr. Amir shared. “It sounds simple, right? But this little ritual has profoundly impacted how I feel throughout the day.”

Many might not realize that they wake up slightly dehydrated. Dr. Amir elaborated, “After seven or eight hours of sleep without any intake of fluids, your body is naturally a bit dehydrated. Even if you don’t feel thirsty, this lack of hydration can result in feeling sluggish, mentally foggy, and even irritable before your day has truly started.”

By adopting this easy habit, Dr. Amir promises a noticeable improvement in overall well-being, proving that sometimes the simplest solutions are the most effective. So, before reaching for that coffee pot, consider starting your day with a refreshing glass of water to set a positive tone for the hours ahead.

“So here’s what happens when you drink that first glass of water.” He listed a number of benefits that come with drinking water first thing in the morning.

Metabolism

“It kickstarts your metabolism,” he said. “Your body gets the message that it’s time to wake up and get things moving.

“It helps flush out toxins and waste products your body’s been working to process overnight and it gives your kidneys, the liver a little morning boost.”

Brain

Dr Amir continued: “And really importantly for me, it hydrates your brain, improving focus, memory, and mood. Even mild dehydration can affect concentration.”

Digestion

He said: “It helps your digestion, too. Your stomach and intestines need water to work efficiently, especially if you’re having a high fibre breakfast, which we should all be having.”

Skin

Dr Amir said: “And it can even support healthy skin. Hydration from the inside helps maintain elasticity and glow.”

He added: “For me it’s become a small ritual. That first glass of water is like saying, ‘Right, I’m looking after myself today.

“I keep it by my bedside, so it’s there first thing. I see it when I wake up, so I know, I have to drink it.

“So if you’re looking for one easy health habit, that takes 10 seconds and sets the tone for the whole day, a glass of water first thing in the morning, is what you should be doing.

“It’s free, it’s simple and your body will thank you for it.”

The NHS recommends you drink plenty of fluids such as water, diluted squash and fruit juice to stay hydrated throughout the day. You should aim for six to eight glasses daily.
