Around 25 percent of healthy people will experience bloating at some point. While the uncomfortable problem is usually caused by a build-up of gas in the gut, it can also be triggered by digestive issues such as constipation or food intolerances.

Fortunately, five breakfast foods could help avoid general bloating problems that are not caused by an underlying health issue.

Dr Joseph Salhab, a board-certified gastroenterologist took to his TikTok, to outline the options “that won’t cause bloating or gas”.

1. Avocado

The gastroenterologist explained that the creamy fruit contains digestive enzymes that help break down fats which could help minimise bloating.

However, avocados might not be the safest bet for everyone. People suffering from irritable bowel syndrome who don’t tolerate naturally occurring sugar alcohols, polyols, could experience a stretched tummy after eating more than an eighth of an avocado.

2. Sourdough bread

If you’re a fan of a slice of bread for breakfast, the doctor recommended an option that contains probiotics and is lower in gluten and fructans, which could lessen gas production.

Dr Salhab recommended opting for sourdough bread. “It’s amazing for your gut health,” he added.

3. Pineapple

Another breakfast food that won’t cause bloating or gas is pineapple which is packed with bromelain, the doctor shared.

He explained that the mixture of enzymes could help digest proteins, benefiting your tummy.

4. Kiwi

Avocado and pineapple aren’t the only fruits that should make your breakfast menu, as kiwi also contains digestive enzymes which could make it a good choice first thing in the morning.

5. Papaya

This tropical option also contains digestive enzymes that could help you start the day on the right foot.

6. Ginger

Dr Salhab said: “If you’re looking for morning tea, try ginger tea. You can use honey as a sweetener. Honey contains digestive enzymes that help break down starches.”
