Over the years, you may have experimented with a variety of diets in an attempt to improve your health, lose weight and generally feel more fit.

However, if you’re aiming to live longer, it might be time to try something different. Health experts worldwide have labelled one particular diet as one of the “world’s healthiest diets”, and there’s a specific reason for this.

Those who adhere to it tend to live significantly longer lives, with many reaching at least their 100th birthday. Dr Karan Rajan, popular on TikTok for his straightforward health advice, has shed light on this topic.

When asked about the “secret to longevity”, he had one key piece of advice to share, originating from the smallest and least populated of Japan’s five main islands.

In an explanatory video, he revealed: “We can find out from Okinawa, the island of immortals. They have an unusually high number of people who are living past 100.

“They have a diet heavy in fibre-rich carbohydrates. They eat lots of fermented foods that aids their gut health.”

He added: “They undertake a lot of exercise that improves heart health and reduces stress. Their greatest secret is a social support network called a ‘Moai’ – a life-long circle of friends that can provide emotional and financial support in times of need.

“And a sense of purpose in life called ‘ikigai’ – a reason to wake up in the morning, making them feel needed.”

What is the Okinawan diet?

The Okinawan diet, hailed by some as the “healthiest diet in the world” and highly regarded by many, is known for its numerous health benefits.

Japan, where this diet originates, boasts the lowest obesity rates and third longest life expectancy among developed countries. The diet emphasises the consumption of super healthy foods.

Key components of the Okinawan diet include fish, seafood, tofu and other nutrient-rich foods, with a notable absence of processed foods.

The diet’s health benefits are attributed to its focus on soy and fresh fish, leading to low saturated fat intake and a high consumption of antioxidant-rich foods like seaweed and sweet potatoes.

The diet also promotes foods with a low glycaemic index, aiding in blood sugar regulation and healthy digestion. Portion control is another crucial aspect of this diet.

The Okinawan diet is characterised by small portion sizes, helping to maintain a lower calorie intake. This has been associated with increased longevity and a reduced risk of chronic health issues, making it a highly beneficial diet.

Calories are the fuel our bodies need to function effectively. To keep your weight steady, the calories you burn should match the calories you consume.

On average, a man needs around 2,500 calories per day, while a woman requires about 2,000 calories daily.
