ECONOMY BOROUGH, Pa. (AP) — A bus transporting a junior high football team encountered an accident north of Pittsburgh on Saturday. Authorities reported that 21 out of the 28 passengers required hospital care.

The group, consisting of 25 Aliquippa Junior High students and three adults, was on their way to a game in Gibsonia. The incident took place in Economy Borough, around 20 miles from Pittsburgh.

Economy Borough Police Chief Michael O’Brien said he didn’t have information on the medical status of those taken to hospitals.

O’Brien said he understood the bus turned on its side during the crash but came back upright as the students were evacuating the vehicle.

The police chief mentioned that the crash happened at a challenging section of the roadway. “It’s on a problematic curve,” O’Brien noted. “An investigation is underway to determine the cause.”

On Facebook, the Aliquippa Junior High football team announced that evaluations were being conducted for every player and sought “thoughts or prayers for each player or coach traveling this morning.”
