A historic chapter in English football is drawing to a close as the former York Street stadium, once the fervent home of Boston United, is slated for demolition to make way for a new NHS health facility. This transformation will see the site reborn as a Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC), marking a significant shift in its legacy.

Boston United, affectionately known as the Pilgrims, graced the pitch of York Street from 1933 until their departure in 2020 to the newer Boston Community Stadium. The ground holds memories of the club’s tenure in the English Football League from 2002 to 2007, before their relegation from League Two. Among its storied past, the stadium witnessed a brief yet memorable stint by England football icon Paul Gascoigne, who joined the club in 2004 as a player-coach under manager Steve Evans. Although Gascoigne’s time with the club was short-lived, his presence added a notable chapter to the stadium’s history as he pursued coaching after leaving Boston, marking it as his final English club.

Reflecting on his departure, the former Tottenham and Everton midfielder deemed it ‘one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make in my professional career so far.’ Post-Boston, Gascoigne aimed to enhance his coaching credentials by attending a Football Association course led by Sammy Lee. After Boston United moved on, Railway Athletic FC briefly occupied the stadium before it fell into disuse in 2022. Subsequently, the site was acquired by the United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The redevelopment plan for York Street envisions a state-of-the-art Community Diagnostic Centre, a project aimed at expediting health condition diagnoses for local residents. This pivotal facility is projected to open its doors by 2027, backed by an investment of £24.9 million, underlining its importance to the community’s healthcare infrastructure.

Poyntons Consultancy, the surveying firm responsible for overseeing the sale of the site, lauds this transition as a significant milestone for the town. They commented, “We are delighted to have played such an important role in completing the sale of the York Street site. This is a landmark project for Boston, and being able to help bring forward a development that will deliver lasting, positive benefits for the town.”

The CDC is projected to serve approximately 350 patients daily, relieving pressure on local hospital services. Daren Fradgley, of Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group, said: “This marks the start of the next exciting chapter of our Lincolnshire Community Diagnostic Centre Programme.

“Community diagnostic centres make it quicker and easier to access the tests patients need as part of their care.

“The feedback we’ve had from patients about our community diagnostic centres in Grantham, Lincoln and Skegness has been overwhelmingly positive and we hope to replicate this in Boston.

“We want to be ambitious with the opportunities that we have to deliver care differently and make access to care better for patients.”
