I always make this homemade ginger shot with just 4 ingredients - it takes seconds

Many people opt for the intense mix of roots and citrus to kickstart a healthy day, often in the form of a ginger shot. As a keen enthusiast of these ginger shots, I was taken aback by the wasteful nature of purchasing small shots for £1-£2 each. In an effort to save money and reduce plastic waste, I began experimenting with homemade recipes and have finally perfected one that I’m excited to share.

With colder months often comes an increase in colds and flu, making these invigorating shots more popular. Both ginger and turmeric are staples in traditional medicine, packed with natural compounds that can help soothe nausea and aid digestion. According to London nutritionist Clariss Lenherr, “Ginger holds anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities due to compounds like gingerol, making ginger shots beneficial for supporting a robust immune system.” Crafting these shots at home is easy, and after trying various mixes with ingredients like apple juice, carrots, oranges, and honey, I’ve settled on a simple recipe with just four natural ingredients.

The recipe, which is similar to Aline Cueni’s formula of the ‘Aline Made blog’, calls upon lemon juice, an apple, turmeric, root ginger, and water.

Aline also suggests sweetening the mixture with date syrup, but I don’t think you need it. A drizzle of honey will do.

To prepare this zesty juice at home, a blender and a sieve to remove the ginger pulp are necessary. Keep the skin on the ginger for the best results.

Some scientific studies suggest that the peel contains more polyphenols and citrusy aromas.

Ginger turmeric shot recipe

Ingredients

One apple

Half a lemon, juice only

30g ginger (approx. one inch piece)

One tsp ground turmeric

One cup of water (240ml)

Method

Firstly, rinse the ginger and an apple, then chop them into small pieces. Add them to the blender with the juice from half a lemon, ensuring no seeds are included.

Pour in one cup of tap water and add the turmeric before securing the lid and blitzing everything for a few seconds.

The colour should be a bold yellow-orange hue with a thick consistency.

Place a sieve over a bowl or jug and pour the blended mix into it. Let the liquid pass through, using a spoon to press it through if necessary.

Pour the prepared ginger shot mixture into a clean, dry glass bottle, or drink it immediately. For a less intense flavor, dilute with water or add a hint of honey or syrup to make it sweeter.

The mixture should make around eight servings. Store in the fridge for three to five days, and always shake the mixture well before pouring.
