Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by impaired insulin production.

Deprived of this key mechanism, your blood glucose is left to its own devices.

This is where lifestyle choices can step in with their ability to either help keep blood sugar in check or send it through the roof.

Fortunately, a pharmacist has revealed the “best” way to snack before bed to keep your blood glucose happy.

Abbas Kanani, pharmacist from Chemist Click, said: “If you want to snack before bed, you should stick to healthy foods and stay clear of any foods that could cause a spike in your blood sugar levels.

“You could snack on nuts, berries, carrot sticks or whole wheat crackers and you should avoid caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea and sugary drinks too.”

All of these snacks have one thing in common – they are good sources of dietary fibre.

Fibre is a carbohydrate which can’t be digested, so it can help slow down the rise in your blood sugar following a meal.

The Mayo Clinic explains that soluble fibre, in particular, can slow the absorption of sugar and help improve your blood glucose levels.

In fact, the health portal shared that a healthy diet that includes this carbohydrate may also reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes.co.uk added that studies suggest that even modest increases in soluble fibre intake can help better blood sugar control.

Apart from choosing your pre-bedtime snack carefully, the pharmacist recommended one more thing to do before you call it a day.

He said: “It’s a good idea to check your glucose before going to bed.

“Recording your results can help to inform you about how well you are managing your diabetes so you can stay as healthy as possible.”
