Arthritis breakthrough as new remedy could ease pain for millions

An innovative approach to alleviating arthritis discomfort, which affects millions, has come to light. Approximately 10 million individuals in the UK endure the debilitating effects of osteoarthritis, a condition that often results in severe joint pain.

Recent studies have highlighted the potential of an ancient botanical remedy to combat arthritis-related pain. Experiments conducted on mice have shown that alternanthera littoralis, commonly referred to as Joseph’s Coat, may effectively decrease joint inflammation, swelling, and stiffness. This medicinal herb, native to Brazil’s coastal areas, has traditionally been used to treat bacterial and fungal ailments.

According to the Daily Mail, scientists now see promise in Joseph’s Coat as a treatment option for arthritis sufferers. However, they emphasize the necessity of additional research to validate its efficacy and safety for human use.

In a publication by the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, researchers from the Federal University of Grande Dourados reported that the herb exhibited “notable anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-arthritic properties.”

The researchers stated, “These findings support the traditional application of alternanthera littoralis and highlight its potential as a viable and safe therapeutic option for managing inflammatory conditions.”

Furthermore, the researchers proposed that the herb might offer protective benefits for joint tissues. They acknowledged that while the findings are “promising,” the exact molecular mechanisms remain unknown and warrant further exploration.

They said: “Despite the pharmacological benefits observed, a rigorous toxicological assessment is crucial prior to any therapeutic consideration.”

While most doctors recommend exercise and weight management to fight against arthritis, these are sometimes not enough to manage the pain. Most pain relief options are also limited and short term.

According to charity Arthritis UK, around 10 million people are affected by arthritis in the UK while this figure is 33 million in the US. The condition occurs when the protective cartilage on the end of bones breaks down over time.

The knee is the most likely joint to be affected, impacting over half of all osteoarthritis conditions. Surveys from Arthritis UK show a third of people with osteoarthritis experience severe pain every day.
