The term ‘cat lady’ is widely recognised, and for some, a life surrounded by feline companions might be their idea of heaven. However, if you’re struggling to maintain healthy human relationships, it might be time to reassess your behaviour.

Psychology suggests that certain behaviours could lead women to spend their twilight years with only their cats for company. Some habits might be setting you on the path to becoming a cat lady – and the reasons behind this might surprise you.

For some, choosing to live alone with a cat is a conscious lifestyle decision, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. However, if the thought of ending up alone with your cats fills you with dread, keep reading to discover what you might be doing wrong – and how to rectify it, reports the Mirror US.

Being heartless

If those around you are suggesting that you’re not treating people well, it might be wise to take their advice on board. Being heartless, cruel or unkind can result in loneliness.

Would you treat your cats in such a manner? Probably not – so bear in mind, humans crave empathy and understanding in relationships.

Easily bored

If you find yourself constantly seeking new relationships due to boredom, it might be time for some introspection. A constant need for stimulation and novelty can stem from internal insecurities.

What are your expectations from a relationship? Could it be that fear of intimacy is causing you to move on prematurely?

If you’re guilty of ghosting someone without providing an explanation, it might be time to reflect on the root cause of this behaviour.

Dating for looks

If you’re more interested in a person’s physical appearance than their soul, you risk becoming a ‘cat lady’. Pursuing a life driven by ego can lead to constant drama, which only your cats will tolerate.

Treating men like ATMs

Overvaluing money – particularly someone else’s – could lead you down a path of solitude. Men (and women) offer more than just financial security.

Try looking beyond wealth and engage in some introspection to discover a new direction in life. Focusing solely on financial success can negatively affect relationships, leading to stress and dependency.

It can also make you come across as needy and superficial. Healthy relationships are built on love, communication, understanding, and equality.

Playing games and ghosting

A lack of consideration can often lead to loneliness. Women who ghost people and then expect to reconnect on their own terms usually set themselves up for failure.

The other party is likely to feel hurt and confused, and behaving in this way could result in you ending up alone. You may have unresolved insecurities that lead to ghosting and game-playing, but while cats might not mind this behaviour, humans certainly do.

Lack of genuine love

If you’re not dating with the intention of finding genuine, unconditional love, there’s a high chance you’ll end up alone. Some women date without seeking love or commitment, which means they struggle to express love.

These women might be needy and financially insecure, and it could be beneficial for them to delve into their inner selves. Counselling or other forms of talking therapy could help them find peace and eventually, true love.

Frequent infidelity

This is potentially one of the most significant factors that could result in you spending your later years alone with your cats. Cheating often stems from insecurity, loneliness, and ego – while it may not always be one person’s fault when infidelity occurs, honesty remains a choice.

Feeling neglected can drive some to seek satisfaction elsewhere, but if you’re unhappy, it’s best to confront it. Inform your partner that the relationship has ended, show courage, rather than sneaking around – as this could lead to a lonely future.

Vanity and narcissism

Women who prioritise a man’s physical appearance over his entire personality could be setting themselves up for loneliness. If you find yourself pursuing someone solely based on their looks, this could indicate an unhealthy focus, especially if you’re looking for a long-term partner.

Relationship satisfaction is not just about physical attraction, but also hinges on personality compatibility and shared values. Being overly focused on your partner’s looks could be a sign of narcissism, which might need addressing.

Otherwise, you may find yourself alone with only your cats for company.
