Study reveals top unexpected changes women experience during pregnancy

A new study has shed light on some of the lesser-known changes women undergo during pregnancy, including excessive saliva, mysterious skin tags, blurry vision, and a sharp pelvic pain known as “lightning crotch”.

The research, which surveyed 2,000 mothers, revealed surprising and often unspoken bodily changes experienced throughout their pregnancy journeys.

Unexpected changes reported by participants included larger feet, constant belching, and an enhanced sense of smell. Moreover, nearly one in five women were taken aback to experience a peculiar metallic taste in their mouths.

Around 70% of respondents who battled with pregnancy rhinitis – a reaction causing nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and itching – found the condition particularly tough to handle, likening it to a relentless nine-month head cold.

TV presenter and broadcaster Ashley James, who collaborated with AnuSol Natural Cream, the sponsor of the study, commented: “Pregnancy is a beautiful journey, but let’s be real, it also comes with a few, shall we say, ‘less glamorous’ surprises.”

“From films and TV shows, you might think the most serious pregnancy symptoms would include a healthy glow and perhaps a struggle to get off the sofa,” but, she added “the reality is usually far different and can include lots of things people may not have even thought about.”

The study revealed that over half of women noted frequent bathroom visits as an unavoidable aspect of pregnancy. However, only 43% were aware of the prevalence of haemorrhoids – commonly known as piles – despite them affecting approximately one in three pregnancies.

Among those who suffered from piles, nearly half experienced symptoms during their third trimester, with 59% describing the pain as “moderate” or “severe.”

Interestingly, while 67% of women overall claimed they enjoyed being pregnant, more than four in ten confessed that the physical changes significantly affected their emotional well-being.

In fact, 57% felt they were inadequately prepared for many of the less-discussed side effects of pregnancy and postpartum recovery, leading three-quarters of respondents to demand better awareness and education about the full range of experiences during this journey.

Ashley commented: “Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but post-natal recovery can also bring some surprising physical changes that many people don’t expect.

“These unexpected shifts can be both fascinating and challenging, affecting not just the body but also a person’s confidence and emotional well-being. Understanding that these changes are normal and often temporary can help alleviate concerns and reassure those going through them.”
